Below are listed just some of the plants 
growing within that lovely, aromatic herb garden and…according to 
local West Indian folklore, their traditional medicinal properties.


 

  • Aloe – Heated to bring boil to a head, sliced and eaten for colds, jelly for wrinkles, skin problems and sunburn.
  • Basil – Tea for mild nervous disorders, menstrual pain, bad heart, upset stomach.
  • Cocolue – (Watercress) thrush and body coolant.
  • Eucalyptus – Tea for colds and fever. Leaves crushed for decongestant.
  • Four o’clock – Crushed leaves with Vaseline for boils, tea of new leaves to cool blood.
  • Garlic – Colds, coughs, fever, blood pressure, diabetes, diarrhea, earache, intestinal infection, ringworm, sinusitis, virus, worms. (boiled in milk).
  • Ginger Thomas – Colds, fever, headaches, diabetes, jaundice. (tea from leaves and flowers).
  • Hibiscus – Faded flowers in cough syrup.
  • Japana – Revivant and cough syrup.
  • Lemon Grass – Flu and fever.
  • Lignum Vitae – Leaves and flowers for debility – bark for fish poisoning.
  • Lime Bush – Upset stomach (tea).
  • Marigold – Abscesses and boils (leaves and flowers poultice).
  • Marjoram – Head cold and chest cold – mild tea for baby’s colic. Liver obstruction (tea).
  • Mints – Stomach ache, dispels gas and mild laxative (tea).
  • Nutmeg – Athletes foot (ointment), poultices for sore body parts.
  • Onions – Colds, stomach cleanser, rub on burns, stimulates appetite (ingestion).
  • Papaya – Seeds steeped for diabetes. Leaves tenderize meat, green fruit crushed for bruises.
  • Passion Fruit or Pap Vine – Flower-eye tonic, tension, tension headache, high blood pressure. (tea).
  • Parsley – Heart strengthener, digestion inducer, urinary tract fortifier. (tea or ingestion).
  • Periwinkle – Diabetes, menstrual trauma, soothes nerves. (tea)
  • Pomegranate – Leaves and blossoms and seed – tea for dysentery. Rind and bark for tapeworms.
  • Prickly Pear – Washing hair, inflamed eyes, high blood pressure. Cataplasm with cornmeal eases back ache or abdominal inflammation.
  • Rosemary – Tea for nervous tension and headache. Dried and burned, fumigates sick rooms.
  • Sarsaparilla (Candle bush) – blood purifier from dried roots.
  • Sorrel – Leaves combined with carrot tops for cooling and kidney or bladder ailments.
  • Soursop – Tea as sedative – sleep inducer. Plug (center of fruit) for bedwetting.
  • Wurra Wine (Vervain) – Cools blood, relieves constipation, fever and worms. Crushed leaves in bush bath soothes prickly heat.
