The Budget Summit Was Positive
They met at Renaissance Grand Beach Resort yesterday in an unprecedented gathering of all elected officials, the heads of finance and budget offices, labor leaders, business representatives. The one day summit to seek solutions to the territories financial crisis. While no earthshaking statements were released they Governor, Senate President and all present agreed to work together to resolve what may be a 26 million dollar shortfall by year’s end. American Eagle Updates the Fleet
The regional carrier of American Airlines announced that they have completed a replacement of their fleet of airplanes in the region. All flights out of San Juan will now fly on ATR-42 planes or the ATR 72. The planes will replace the Shorts 11 that have been in use for years. The new planes hold 64 passengers and allow them to stand up while boarding and has other amenities.
Lawyers Need a License
Is it good news or bad? The court has ruled that all lawyers and every lawyer in each law firm must have a license to do business in the Virgin Islands. Former Commissioner of Licensing Cain Magras says the government is owed about a million dollars in business license fees by lawyers in the the territory. The ruling overturns a previous court decision that only the principals of a law firm need a business license. It’s the law, lawyers need to pay license fees. 09/03/97 7:57 AM
British Virgin Islands Gets a Million from TV and Films.
Maybe the US Virgin Islands should be getting more of this business, but the British Virgin Islands earned more than a million dollars in television, film and catalog photo shoots this past year. Victoria’s Secret shot a catalog in the British Virgin Islands, so did the BBC and ABC.
Vexing Power Outages on St. Croix Under Control
WAPA has been plagued with minor power outages on St. Croix this week. One outage forced the St. Croix Education Complex to close early yesterday. WAPA says they have the problems under control and school will be normal today. 09/03/97 7:57 AM

Graffiti Street is holding auditions this week. Today at 3:30 PM – in the trailer next to the CAHS Art Dept. is auditions for men. Lockhart PTA is meeting today at 5:30 PM – in the Cafeteria and the PTA will clean up the campus on Saturday. CAHS Class of 1964 is holding a class meeting at the Children’s Room of the Enid Baa Library at 5:30 PM – Caribbean Dance School has scholarships available for dance education, but today is the deadline to apply. Fall registration is Sept 6th from 9:00 AM – to Noon There will be more trees on St. Croix after the Community United methodist Center finishes its upcoming workshop on Trees in the Urban Environment. Calendar Time
Emanuel Benjamin Oliver School is going to offer their annual calendar of birthdays. Now about 1000 people got into last years calendar and there is room for more. These calendars always sell out. You can get your birthday into the official Emanuel Benjamin Oliver Calendar starting tomorrow at 775-2000. The deadline is October 3rd. Band Booster Leader Clayton Emanuel is taking orders for the calendar too.
