Economic Policy Panel Setting up Enterprise Zone
St. Croix is going to get an economic shot in the arm. The Economic policy council began work on creating the incentives to attract business to Frederiksted and Christiansted. The plan should be unveiled in 60 days to set up tax incentives, tax exemptions, wage credits and incentives to rehabilitate buildings. The Governor used the meeting of the Economic Council to say that last years 27 million in retro pay has come back to the government in gross receipts and income taxes. He also reminded the council that the legislation calls for annual payments on the retro pay. 05/07/97 10:01 AM

Can Potter Peg the Price of Gas?
Osbert Potter says the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs is beginning a process to reduce the price of gasoline at the pump. Saying the price we pay is ludicrous, Potter says he has authority to set a profit margin for the vendors of gasoline. 05/07/97 9:45 AM
Lorraine Berry Call for Select Committee
Senate President Lorraine Berry is calling a news conference today to announce the formation of a Senate Select Committee on Government Accountability. Berry is expected to call the committee to probe the government’s finances, She says there is almost a total lack of information for both the senators and the general public. The Select committee will be under the joint leadership of Berry and Senator Gomez. 05/07/97 10:01 AM
Here’s Good News from Austria
Attorney Blum of St. Thomas is in Kaprun Austria this week at a world-wide conference on Low-Tax and No-Tax transactions. He says there is an upsurge of interest in financial services business in the the US Virgin Islands. Blum is an expert on the exempt company and foreign sales corporation law – he wrote it. Baha’I National Center to get Fix-Up
The original Baha’I National Center was in Havensite, but alas Hurricane Marilyn blew that place away. Now the Baha’I community has a new place to call home. And this is a work weekend for the Baha’I community to fix up the new center. Wear work clothes, Bring scraper and brushes. The paint is there. Call 774-3648.
Who is the Mandingo Man Coming to St. Thomas
Are you interested in African roots – what peoples lives were like hundreds of years ago. There is a special program coming to St. Thomas all about one man’s African roots. Professor Svend Holsoe has been studying the old Danish records and traced the life of a Mandingo Man named Erasmus from Africa through the slave market to a plantation on St. Croix. You can learn all about this man’s life on Thursday evening at the Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute at 6:30 PM –
Coral Bay Fire Station is Making progress
If you see Fire Service Chief Sydney Challenger, you’ll see him in Coral Bay where he is putting the finishing touches on the Coral Bay Fire Station. The new facility still doesn’t have an opening day, but when it opens it will be safer for the firemen and better for the residents. From Coral Bay to the Cruz Bay fire station is 8 miles and a long wait in the case of a fire.
Are you Madd about drunk driving.
Michelle Albany of Frederiksted St. Croix is a delegate to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Youth Summit in Washington. The Summit is to raise young people’s awareness of the dangers of alcohol. Michelle Albany is from the Good Hope School and will share her experience when she returns. Right here at home you can learn what to tell your children about drinking.. Water Island Report
Residents are calling it Roy’s Navy, The Governor asked the Navy for some surplus vessles that could become the water island ferry and he got four ex-army barges. The assortment of barges are moored in Flamingo Bay of Water Island waiting for a plan to put them to use. Some hoped they were to haul debris, but they are not set up for that. Makes you wonder what The Governor will get now that he’s asked the Navy for a ship to fight firesÖ We’ll see.
