Crime Report to Governor

Governor Schneider has received a draft of the report from the Commission on Crime and he wants more. He is asking members of the 23 person Crime Commission to get more input from the community. Krim Ballentine, a Commission member, calls this a “long term plan” and that the group will go into the community to get more ideas. The draft report calls for changes in the police Dept. more training for officers and the procedures used by police. Governor Schneider wants to get to the root of the crime problem, not just the management of criminals. Meanwhile, the report on Education is in the Governors hand, but has not yet been made public.

Finance to Hold Emergency Meeting

Senator Judy Gomez announced that the Finance Committee will hold an emergency meeting today in the he St. Thomas Legislative Chambers to examine Bill 22-082 which allows the Port Authority to float 3.5 million dollars worth of bonds to build the Molasses Pier in St. Croix. The pier project is ready to go, but the law requires legislative approval.

Victor O. Frazer makes good news

Former Congressman Victor Frazer may not be our delegate in Washington, but he is always looking for ways to help the Virgin Islands. Frazer brought NASA executive Bettie White to UVI last Sunday to see how her office can assist the university. Ms. White is the director of Minority University Research and Education at NASA. She met with Dr Kean and Dr. Moolenaar. She has a budget of 54 million dollars for space research and training.

Virgin Islands America’s Cup will Open Marine Program for Youth

The America’s Cup Challenge has announced that Pauline Venzen-Dawes and John Holmberg are the co-directors of the Virgin Islands Marine Program – that program will reach out to our youth with educational programs in marine related areas like swimming, sailing and diving. Holmberg has been taking his slide show on the road to show school students.

DPNR has 2 million dollars for community grants

We have 2.145 million in community development block grants to plan. There will be public hearings on how to best spend the community block grants They are coming up on June 24 on St. John, June 25th on St. Thomas and June 26th on St. Croix.

Barnacle Bills To Close

Barnacle Bills Restaurant in Subbase is going to close after 14 years of service food drinks and music. They are throwing a party to bring Bills to a close. On Monday they will hold the Last Limelight Monday, the 619th in a row with an open microphone, Tuesday there’s a reggae band, Wednesday, its the Sax Symbols, Thursday there’s Full Moon Rising, Friday the Public Nuisance Band, Saturday is the grand finale with every musician in the Virgin Islands invited to come play until the bar is bled dry.

Graduation Speaker Needs High Chair

At the graduation for the Guy Benjamin School in Coral Bay. The keynote speaker was no bigger than the graduates themselves, he was 11 year old Earl Richards Jr. Former St. John Carnival Prince who was accelerate from the class at Benjamin school to the 6th grade at Antilles School on St. Thomas where he was recently named a member of the national Jr. Honor Society and has maintained a straight A average in Antilles School. Earl said he did not want his class to graduate without him.
