Volunteers Help Put Out the Fire and No One Was Hurt

A serious fire gutted three buildings on St. John yesterday. The fire service brought the fire under control with the help of volunteers on the scene and additional fire fighting apparatus from St. Thomas and Caneel Bay. The electricity on St. John was shut off during the fire. The power is back on. No one was hurt. Surrounding buildings were saved through the efforts of volunteers.

New Commissioner of Labor

Governor Schneider appointed a new Commissioner of Labor. Carmelo Riviera will replace the Lisa Harris-Moorhead. The Governor says he is pleased to bring a talented native son back to the Virgin Islands. Riviera graduated from UVI with the class of 1971.

Violent Youths To Go To Adult Prison

The Governor has proposed legislation to separate serious juvenile offenders from those who committed lesser crimes. The escape of two youths from the Youth Rehabilitation Center highlighted the need to separate the different categories of youth offenders.

Berry: Fix McBean Ballpark!

Lorraine Berry has called for full repairs of the Al McBean Ballpark. Despite statements that the ball field was ready except for the delays due to rain, the Senate President has called for repair of the bathrooms, grading and filling of the baseball diamond, and changes to the lighting.

Solid Waste Carriers Must Recertify

Solid Waste carriers are reminded that they have to get re-certified during this month. You have until Monday February 3rd to get re-certified.

DLCA Pulls License

DLCA has pulled the construction license from Christopher Wilkes doing business as Wilkes Construction. He is cited fort breaching contracts and failure to complete jobs. Bad news for Wilkes, good news, we canít do it again. Just another good reason to ask a contractor if he has a current license from DLCA.

Spanish Club at Dober School

The Dober school is proud to have formed a Spanish language club for 25 students in the 4th 5th and 6th grades. They are trying to give new life to an old club and they are seeking financial support to take the students on a trip to Puerto Rico.[

Saints Peter and Paul – Open for School!

Saints Peter and Paul School is celebrating Catholic Schools Week through February 2nd with the theme Schools You Can Believe In. The Catholic schools are alive and well. They have no plans to close and they are accepting application for the next school year. Call 774-2199

Smoky the Bearís Friends Visit Virgin Islands

The Fire service is hosting a group from the International Institute of Tropical Forestry in San Juan and for the National Fire Service in Colorado. They provide grant funds to our fire fighters. They are touring our islands to see how well prepared we are to fight Forrest or brush fires. They will be recommending that our fire service get more grant funds for fire training. Oh, yes, Smoky the Bear reminds you that only you can prevent forest fires.

New Tech Director at Reichhold Center for the Performing Arts

Reichhold Center for the Performing Arts has a new Technical Director. David Steinmetz is joining the Reichhold Center to handle restoring the facility to its pre-Hurricane Marilyn condition. Steinmetz will coordinate all productions and presentations , hire and train stage hands and maintain the facilityís equipment.
