Government House – to Get Full Renovation

Government House in St. Croix, long an eyesore is finally going to get a total renovation. The damage is from Hugo, the money was financed in 1994, but the planning and paperwork took until now. Oh, and the asbestos removal. St. Croix Government house will new masonry, a new courtyard facade and reflecting pool, new windows, shutters, doors, and a new mahogany floor in the ballroom. 04/02/97 7:29 AM

Parole Board has Quorum

The Virgin Islands now has a quorum on the Parole Board. Attorney General Julio Brady says we have 100 local prisoners and 23 federal prisoners who are eligible for parole. Of course, the real topic is prison overcrowding and the fines the Government has to pay for overcrowding. The Parole Board will release non-violent prisoners. The Governor submitted new legislation to expand the Attorney General’s power to transfer prisoners to relieve overcrowding. The Senate has a public hearing tonight about the University’s funding. 04/02/97 7:23 AM

Delegate Christian-Green has her own Omnibus Territories Act

Delegate Christian-Green has introduced her own version of the Omnibus Territories Act to the US Congress. Dr. Christian Green says the town meetings led her revise the bill. The Delegate’s bill would give our Senate to right to decide the rules regarding the Governor’s powers when he is off island. Her bill would also give the Governor one more nomination to the Presidential Commission to study our economy.

INS has Coding Plan

There has been a lot of confusion regarding the INS rules for adjustment of status and naturalization. There is no emergency to file forms. There are no mass deportations about to begin. Please do not panic. If you need naturalization forms call 800-870-3676. But be careful of lawyers preying on green card holders who are concerned about the rules. 04/01/97 11:36 AM

New Rate Card Out

The Department of Tourism has released the 1997 Spring and Summer rate sheet for the US Virgin Islands. It includes maps, hotel descriptions and rates. 50,000 copies will be inserted in Travel Weekly Magazine but oops, the copies for St. Thomas won’t be here until next week. 04/02/97 12:05 PM

Martin Public Relations says that WSTA has a world wide web site and that the Good News Headlines is the only daily news published on the web from the USVI. And WSTA is going to open a Carnival Section of our web page with the top Carnival hits. It is not yet open for listening – stay tuned.

Winners in Easter Bonnet Contest

Sparks and Senator Gomez held their Easter Bonnet contest and there are winners. 4th place went to Rose Francis, 3rd place to Lela Felix. Ms Ruby Charles was second, and the top prize in the he Easter Bonnet Contest went to Rita Wheatley. 04/02/97 7:35 AM
