Governor’s Bash Drew hundreds
It was part birthday party, and part celebration of Organic Act Day and part rally for Roy and all fun. Hundreds of revelers turned out yesterday at Magen’s Bay Beach to enjoy the party. They snarled traffic all around Magen’s Bay. But the crowd had music and food and they all enjoyed the Organic Act Day Celebration. 06/17/97 8:56 AM

The Games have begun.
The elementary basketball summer festival started on Sunday, and this morning the team from St. Croix called to says Good Morning! Boys and girls teams from four schools from St. Croix, Charles Emanuel School, Claude Markoe, Alfredo Andrews and Pearl B Larsen schools . Games are being held at Emile Griffin Park and at UVI. Next game is at 4:00 PM – today at the park.
Boost for St. Croix Study of Earthquakes
This project will help monitor for earthquakes. St. Croix is going to get some seismic monitoring equipment in a joint project with Puerto Rico. VITEMA Executive Jean Romney said that the new equipment will give us more precise measurements of earthquake activity and could improve the lead time to knowing about a major quake. The gear in St. Croix will be links to the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez. *
The Landfill to Move by 1999
According to documents filed with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Anguilla landfill will move by August of 1999. The landfill is too close to the airport, jeopardizing funds from the FAA and leading to liability if there is a plane crash caused by landfill birds. The FAA has insisted that the landfill move and now we have a date. 06/17/97 8:56 AM

The Republican State Chairman announced that Patricia Harrison is coming to the July Food festival on St. John. Harrison is the second highest elected official in the Republican Party and has responsibility for the Republican Islands caucus which includes Hawaii, Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands 06/17/97 8:56 AM
Senate in Special Session Tomorrow
The Governor has called the Senate into a special session scheduled for Wednesday. The topic if a law that would permit people with delinquent tax bills to trade land for the taxes. Instead of paying with cash, the indebted could give the government land instead. The idea is to give tax payers more options and secure some government land for the home ownership program.
Men’s Center will Rise Again
The bad new is that someone torched the offices of the Men’s Coalition on St. Croix. The good news is that the staff is undaunted. They are back at work holding counseling sessions with the 25 men under their stewardship. Eileen Pennick says, “We are not going to stop.” 06/17/97 8:56 AM
Governor Says Post a Sign
The tax man needs to find your house. The Governor is asking all of us to post the address of our house clearly on the outside of the house so the tax man can assess or home. If the tax man can’t assess the value of your house, the tax bill will be the same old numbers. Put up a sign today.
Phone Survey
The Dept. of Health is beginning a telephone survey about chronic disease prevention. The telephone survey will run from today through July 25th between 10:00 AM – and 2:00 PM – and again from 5:00 PM – to 9:00 PM – Please cooperate and support this telephone survey.
