Savan to Be An Enterprise Zone
Governor Schneider has issued an executive order making Savan an enterprise zone. The Economic Policy Council is being asked to develop a comprehensive assistance plan within 60 days to include tax incentives, and exemptions, rehab funds, wage credits and other incentives to bring new business into Savan.

Senate Finance Committee Hearings
The Senate Finance committee is finished their first day of hearings on the 1998 budget. Office of Management and Budget director Bowry said the effects of Hurricane Marilyn are still effecting the economy, General fund revenues are not back to pre-Marilyn levels yet, while individual income, gross receipts, fuel and road taxes are ahead of their pre-Marilyn levels. Nevertheless, the government’s income is not enough to cover its expenses. Hearings continue today at the Senate in St. Thomas.
West Indian Company Dock Repairs
The WICO Dock is getting some strengthening this summer as they dock staff prepare for the upcoming season. They are adding sheet piles to the south end of the dock and dredging out the silt that has accumulated. The work is being done in the daytime and will not effect the cruise ship traffic.
Furniture dealers – No Bonding
The furniture dealers met last night on St. Thomas. The Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs wants them to have bonds to guard the public against unscrupulous dealing. The dealers say they should not be punished for the bad business of a few. And they want to know why furniture dealers are being singled out.
Recorder of Deeds to Move
The recorded of Deeds is moving – it is the third component of the Lieutenant Governor’s office to move, to Estate Thomas at the Builder’s Emporium building. The Recorded of Deeds will close Wednesday and reopen on Tuesday next week with the same phone number 774-9906
Bill Fishing Tournament is Over
It was their first time in the Virgin Islands and the first time bill fishing. The Shanklin family of Houston Texas took the top prize in this year’s Bill fishing Tournament with eight released fish over the 3 day event. They tagged all eight fish for the Most Tagged Fish title and they also took the first fish title with a catch at 10:15 AM on July 18th. Farmers and Fishermen Grants to be released.
Government house announced that the grants for farmers and fishermen will be released to up to 75 individuals add up to $51,000 and the Department of Agriculture is contacting the farmers now to pick up their checks.
Children Make Calypso
You may have heard their music, the students have been coming together all summer to learn how to create and perform their own calypso music. This Friday from 10:00 AM – to noon at CAHS, The Drug Free Summer Youth Calypso Fest will feature Children from all over performing their own original Calypso. The show is on August 1st at CAHS at 10:00 AM – A Big Thank You to Calypsonians SlyJ, and Solemnity, the teachers and organizers of the show
Patrick Henry is a Finalist in the Conde Nast Essay Contest
Patrick Henry is 11 years old, a student at the Evelyn Williams Elementary School and he is the Finalist from the Virgin Islands in the Conde Nast Essay Contest. Patrick is going to Aruba in Sept. to represent our islands at the big contest.

The Committee on Health is holding hearings tonight on St. Thomas at the Senate chambers at 6:00 PM -, the hearings continue tomorrow on St. John and Thursday on St. Croix. St. John Taxi drivers are having a free training class on Thursday at the National Park Biosphere at Lind Point from 9:00 AM – to noon. A bus tour to park sites is included. It is free
