Feddy Award Nominations Sought
Do you know about the Feddy Award? The Federation dedicated to Youth has their annual program coming up and they are looking for nominations for the FEDDY award. The deadline for nominations is on January 30th. All ATF members have nomination forms.

Senate Finance to Meet
The Senate Finance committee will meet today and take up a request for 2.3 million dollars for the Government Development Bank. They also have a bill to raise the tax rate on long distance calls made from the Virgin Islands. The idea is to put the tax on the companies and not the consumers, but we’ll see. We’ll keep you posted.
Frederiksted to Get Refurbished for Anniversary.
With the 150th anniversary of Emancipation coming up, Frederiksted is getting some face-lifting. The Committee is inspecting buildings on King Street to see which ones need repair/. They’ll tell us January 28th at a town meeting with results and plans.
On the Calendar are opportunities to make a difference:
CAHS Seniors who need information on financial aid for higher education can come to a workshop on today at 5:30 PM to learn about how to pay for your college degree. And coming up Thursday and Friday, CAHS will hold a special meeting to explain the new block scheduling plan. There is a reception this evening at Tillets Garden with the work of top water color artist Sandy Meyers. The exhibit will be open through the end of January. On January 21st there is a concert with Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops with the Serenac quintet.
PTA Congress
Our PTA Parent Teacher Student Organizations are about to grow. They are creating a island wide congress of PTA organizations. The St. Croix PTA’s are requested to send representatives to a meeting coming up January 23, Friday at St. Croix Central at 5:30 PM – Call Ueylee Burke at 772-5922
Grants for Programs on Emancipation.
Also on the grants front, there are 60,000 in grants from the Virgin Islands Humanities Council and they can’t find enough groups to seek the grants. These are funds to sponsor cultural programs related to the 150th anniversary of emancipation and so far only the Virgin Islands Historians have applied for a grant. The council has grants of up to $2000 for small projects and up to $10,000 for major projects. Late News: WSTA has applied for a grant to produce a series of radio shows on the topic of Emancipation of 1848 and to host a World Wide Web site dedicated to this topic. New Grants Available
The delegate is informing the community that there are new grants available for organizations working to ease the transition from welfare to work. There are 700 million dollars in federal grants are available to fight dependency among welfare recipients. The new grants are available to a wide assortment of community organizations, colleges, community development organizations and more. The Department of Labor has more information

Peace Corp School PTA is meeting at 5:30 PM St. Thomas Lions and Charlotte Amalie Lions Board of Directors will hold a joint meeting at 6:00 PM – at Palm Count of the Harbor View Hotel Today is the first day of registration for classes at the Raphael O. Wheatley Skill Center for classes in computer applications, typing, cosmetics, electronics, masonry, diesel mechanics and Carpentry. Classes begin n February 9th.
