New Horizons
Governor Roy Schneider, in a public ceremony, dedicated the renovated Gramboko Building in Sub Base on Monday, as a new school building for alternative education. The New Horizons School, a program for seventh graders who need a different learning environment. It was formerly housed at the old Territorial Court at Barbel Plaza. Gramboko was being used by the V.I. National Guard. They donated the space, and with help from the Department of Property and Procurement the new New Horizons was painted and repaired, made ready for the start of classes August 25

Parolees
Attorney General Julio Brady wants the public to know a series of parole hearings are scheduled for August 21 for the following inmates: Mao Penha , James Smith, Elvis Stapelton, Lenord Stay, Anthony Stoute, Dale Barned, and David Thompson. Those hearings are scheduled to begin 9:30 a.m. at the Golden Grove Correctional Facility. Members of the public who would like to submit comments on these inmates eligibility for parole are asked by the attorney general to do so 24 hours before the hearing date.
Savaneros Thanks
Anti crime patrols making the rounds in the Savan district of St. Thomas are hearing something they don’t often hear. To the thanks of the residents they serve. Police Commissioner Ramon Davila had some thanks of his own – to the bystanders who voice their discrete gratitude as his officers conducted sweeps of suspected drug markets in the area. Last month Governor Schneider pledged the resources of his administration toward revitalizing Savan. Two weeks ago, Virgin Islands police stepped up their presence in the area as a sign that revitalization is on the way.
Tumorous Turtle
Free at last the juvenile green sea turtle taken in by the National Park Service. The 110 lb turtle was discovered off the island of St. Croix with tumors over each eye. Aides over at the Park Service say she was almost blind when she was discovered by a diving fisherman. Now after two surgeries to remove the six tumors on her eyes and 15 more tumors on her body. The turtle was released back into the wild on Saturday.
Park Center Meeting
Organizers of Monday night’s public meeting on the proposed changes to the National Park Visitors Center praised some 150 St. John residents for coming out to the Julius E. Sprauve School to hear the issues. Architect Glenn Speer, a member of the St. John citizens task force seeking input into the new complex construction, said such public support showed park and local officials how strongly they feel about the future of island. It’s almost time for the Labor Day Festival in Coral Bay St. John. The schedule of activities for the three day holiday weekend begins August 30 with a cookout, 10 a.m. and an arts and crafts fair. Sunday August 31 the crafts fair continues at 2 p.m. with music by local steel bands, and on Labor Day September 1 Coral Bay hosts its famous mini parade. The smallest parade in the Virgin Islands at 10 a.m. followed by a day long food fair along Centerline Road. With live music and a volleyball tournament at the Guy Benjamin basketball court.
