Calypso of the Year

The MSI Calypso of the Year Nominees have been announced. Figgy and King Solomon each had two entries and Louis Ible Jr. has a chance at winning the award three years in a row. The Junior Calypso Competition is this evening at the Lionel Roberts Stadium at 8 PM.

Landfill Smoke

The Senate Committee on Planning and Environmental Protection is meeting today at 6PM to take testimony from residents of the areas around Bovoni landfill regarding the lingering smoke.

Agriculture and Fisheries Grants

The Dept of Agriculture is taking applications for disaster grants and loans for professional farmers and fishermen who suffered economic losses due to the recent hurricane. The documents are due May first, so call Dept of Ag today. In St. Thomas 778-0997, In St. Croix 776-6274. St. John 774-5182.

Virgin Islands to Participate in National Conversation

Two items from Congressman Frazer: The National Endowment for the Humanities announced that it had awarded a grant of $71,000 to the Institute of Teaching and Learning to participate in the “National Conversation – a six way conversation among high school students in six cities. Congressman Victor Frazer also calls all high school artists to submit their best works to the Congressional Art Competition. The art competition is open to all high school students and carries a prize trip to Washington. Call 774-5984. Caribbean Color Exhibit is coming up on May 17th and the deadline to file an application is May 3rd.

The Housing Finance authority is offering a class every Wednesday at 6 PM starting this Wednesday April 17th that’s at the Federal Building Conference Room

Vitelco warns about Fraud

Vitelco says watch out for phone fraud artists using a phony reference to Vitelco as part of their scam. Vitelco does not ask for your credit card numbers or bank information over the phone.

  • Plumbers Association is meeting Tuesday at 5:30 at the Petite Pumproom on St. Thomas
  • St. John Hotel Association and Advertising Age and Ad Club is holding a joint meeting at Windham Sugar Bay at 6 PM this evening it is not tomorrow Wednesday but this evening.
  • The Mega Youth Festival is calling for volunteers to help plan and organize the Festival. Kelvin Vanderpool at Senator Petrus’ office 776-1438.
  • Tomorrow evening the King and Queen of the Bands is at Lionel Roberts Stadium at 8 PM. You can see if Elskoe and Associates can retain their crown. There are majorettes, clowns and dancers. Its fun and it is free. Its how the carnival committee gives back to the community.
