MSI Calypso Competition Nominees

There were 50 entries in this year’s MSI Calypso competition. They
narrowed the field down to 10 nominees for this years award. The winner
will win $2500 and a trip to New York City. The candidates are Running
Scared by Calypso Sis, Mapp-Wonsky Controversy and Call Sam by Sugar
Dee, We Wanna We Retro and One for Milo by Whadablee, Humpty Dumpty
Satan and All with King Kan Fuc Plantae, Whose Fault and No Dice by
Figgy and finally Lea’ Da Alone by Louis Ible Jr. That song by Ras Regg,
Rumors is also on the list. Special recognition goes to Don’t Waste Your
Time by Lady Selector the first junionr to enter as an adult.

Real Estate News

St. Thomas Real Estate is in the news. The new facility at Market
Square East is coming along. The steel work is complete. Cost-U-Less is
planning to move to the new facility as soon as it opens in June. The
steel work is almost complete at the New Banco Popular building across
from Addelita Cancaryn School and the structural work is almost complete
on the new Franks Bakery in Subbase. Meanwhile, the sale of Al Cohen’s
Plaza on Raphune Hill fell through. Lockhart realty decided not to buy
the property until Cohen can clear some of the leases.

Congressman Gephardt Coming to St. Croix

The Ranking Democrat in the US House of Representatives is coming to St.
Croix this week to help bolster the party and rally the membership.
Congressman Dick Gephardt is the Democrat who would become speaker of
the House if the Democrats take control of the house of representatives.
He is due in St. Croix on Saturday as part of a trip to Puerto Rico.

Job Openings

The Job Service has a new list of jobs out. They are looking for Market
Research Analyst, a retail store manager, a Gemologist, cake decorator,
. They have jobs for gem stone setters, Tractor Trailer Drivers,
Chinese cook, Secondary school teacher on sciences and a Painter who
can paint decorative items.

Senators ask for Public Hearings.

Senator Bryan wants to hold hearings on a government plan for AT&T to
negotiate directly with the Attorney General to settle the controversy
over the AT&T drilling problems at Butler Bay St. Croix. Bryan wants
to make sure the negotiations don’t circumvent the legislature

Walking on Sunshine Starts Shooting

The new TV show being shot on St. Croix has picked some of the players.
Robert Luke of Isle 95 will play a bartender. Two students Cameron
Haase and Ruby Ann Des Jardins will play hotel guests. Over 150
islanders have been selected to play extra parts. Filming begins on
Thursday in Christiansted and ends on Friday on Buck Islands. Boat
owners are asked to avoid Buck Island on Friday

Senate Meeting Tomorrow

The senate will meet tomorrow to consider a long slate of nominees and a
bill to reprogram bonds for capital improvement, They have a bill to
require students to perform community service, pass an assessment of
academic skills. They have bill requiring 24 hours service at hospitals
and pharmacies. And a bill to permit the direct election of the Attorney
General. The have a bill to reduce the senate from 15 to 9 members.

VIHA Briefings

Virgin Islands Housing Authority will introduce their new strategic
plan in a community briefing on St. John this evening at 6:00 PM at
Culinary Arts The briefings are a “Coming out party” to unveil the
strategic plan, with a combination of press conference, celebration and
information gathering opportunity – It will also serve as a first
indicator that VIHA intends to do business with its stakeholders in a
different way.

Grant Writing Opportunity

Is your non-profit group interested in helping to celebrate the 150th
Anniversary of Emancipation? The Humanities Council is offering a
Proposal Development Workshop to those non-profit groups to help them
develop their ideas. All you need is a letter of intent sent to the
Humanities Council. Call 776-4044 The deadline is April 27th.

After School Conference Coming Up:

Department of Education has a national teleconference with Vice
President Al Gore on the topic Creating Quality After School Programs.
That’s on Thursday the 16th at 3:30 PM to 4:30 Parents, teachers,
principals and policy makers are invited to attend

Water Island Report

Dr. J. Perlingiero Randall celebrated her 80th Birthday today on Water
Island. Since there is no hotel on the island and no restaurant, she
ended up on St. Thomas for lunch. “Next year In A Real Water Island
Restaurant”
