Climate
The climate is sunny and mild year round. Temperatures range between the 80s of the daytime and the 70s of the evening. Temperatures are somewhat higher in the summer months of June, July, and August. Annual rainfall averages 50 inches, with the mon ths of May, September and October being a bit wetter. Of particular note: You will notice a slight difference in climate among the three islands as well as on different parts of the islands. As you might expect, the higher elevation experiences cooler t emperatures and often more rain. Depending on the orientation of the winds, one side of the island may get more rain than another. In general, the constant easterly trade winds keep the humidity fairly low.
Time
The U.S. Virgin Islands are on Atlantic Standard time which is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard time during daylight savings time (we don’t fall back). The rest of the year, Atlantic Standard time is the same as Eastern Standard time.
Currency
The U.S. Dollar is used both in the U.S. Virgin Islands and the neighboring British Virgin Islands. Credit cards generally are accepted. Traveller’s checks are widely accepted, however, off-island personal checks are rarely accepted, as they take a l ong time to clear. Several major banks have branch offices here — including Chase, Citibank, Scotia, First Bank — and ATM machine are available on all islands.
Taxes
Because the U.S. Virgin Islands are “duty-free”, there is no sales tax. However, an 8% tax is applied to hotel rooms. Airport fees (local and federal) generally are included in your airline ticket price.
