SBA Closed – This Phase of the Recovery is Over

SBA has closed the Tutu Park Mall office. And FEMA is out on Friday. I was the last person in SBA’s office yesterday. They took my papers and closed the doors. This phase of our recovery is over.

New Traffic Signs.

Commissioner Ann Abramson has activated a local contractor to replace the signs that were lost in the storm. The company will mark the sites where signs are gone with large orange wooden stakes. You are asked not to disturb the stakes while the work is proceeding. If you know a missing sign call 776-4844 x 146.

Counseling for Police

Senator Luz James wants more stress counseling for our police. Citing the recent suicide of a police officer and all the stresses of the job, James wants supervisors to look for signs of stress and intervene to help prevent a disaster. It is mental health month and everyone experiences mental stresses in their lives. Those who seek help get better. Counseling works.

Senate Rules Committee

The Senate Rules Committee is meeting today at 10 to take up six bills. One deals with the accumulated sick leave of GERS members, they will consider authorizing funds to extend Hamilton Airport, and a law to allow police to auction recovered property.

New Phone Books.

Vitelco has a new company to produce our telephone books? Vitelco said that ITT World Directories will do our phone book and plans call for better and more complete sections on tourism, community services and more coupons. They may even include an electronic yellow pages, even on the internet.

Hurricane Satellites

The eye in the sky is getting binocular vision. This hurricane season the people who look at hurricanes have two satellites taking pictures for us not just one. They also have a new jet airplane to do higher level analysis of a storm. New computers will give a 72 hour forecast in only 20 minutes. New Auditor

We have a new auditor working to insure that our money is well accounted for. He is Claude A. Molloy Sr. And his new post is the Post Auditor for the Finance Committee. Molloy has a distinguished record of training, experience and prior public service.

  • Block Grant hearings on St. Croix postponed to May 21. The block grant hearings on St. Thomas are still on.
