CAHS Chicken Hawks Flying to London

The Chicken Hawks are flying today. The 130 plus members of the CAHS marching band, jazz band, concert band, steel band, choir, the Majorettes and flag teams are all in the air along with 30 parents and chaperones. They are all headed to London’s Heritage Festival where they will play, compete, do the Easter parade and a church service. Think of all the luggage, the instruments, steel pans – This is one big troop to move. The Band Boosters raised all the money. $1,600 per chaperone and it is all happening without any Government money.

Don’t Cut National Weather Service

Delegate Christian-Green added her voice to the loud cries of protest over the cutback in the National Weather Service. She considers the proper staffing of the National Weather Service a matter of national security.

UVI Safe

Governor Schneider signed amendments to the Casino Control Act after a session where Senators talked him out of a veto. The Governor says he does not want to delay the opening of the first casino on St. Croix. The Governor also reassured the public that UVI will not close. The funding will be found. The university will hold a Summer session and will open in the fall. 03/27/97 7:21 AM

Cruise Ship Reservations are Up!

The Avis published an erroneous report and the Chamber of Commerce picked it up. They say St. Croix got 116 ship visits this season and next year it would be half that. The fact is, according to Jenette Nielsen of the Port Authority – there are already 110 scheduled visits to St. Croix for 1997. And looking at next winter there are already 82 reservations. And the season for heavy booking is still coming up. The Port Authority spends more on the promotion of the Ann Abramson Pier in Frederiksted that all other facilities put together. Filming Our Commercials

Have you seen the film crews around the islands- they are filming our television commercials at places like Lindquist Bay, at the Arboretum, And they’ve shot thousands of film of underwater scenes and scenes of our most memorable natural assets. Bankruptcy Rules May Change Here

A major decision on bankruptcy has caused a major stir. The Business Journal has a cover story about a decision by a bankruptcy judge in Pennsylvania may mean that a bankruptcy filed here in the Virgin Islands may not be part of the federal bankruptcy process. Any bankruptcy here may stay her and not get into the federal system at all. 03/27/97 7:46 AM

Carnival Party on Saturday

Saturday is the 45th Anniversary of the Revival of St. Thomas Carnival. There is a dinner dance at Renaissance Grand Beach Resort on Saturday from 7:00 PM – to midnight with Imaginations Brass.

Teach Old Dogs New Tricks

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, There are special trainers on St. Croix today teaching our police more about how to work with the K-9 corp. The trainers are teaching more officers about how to use dogs. That means the Police and the Dogs are all learning new tricks together. That’s good news.

Write these dates down. April 11 and 12, Delegate Christian-Green is planning a series of Town Meetings for Veterans and She is bringing Congresswoman Brown from the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Good news from Wanda Mills – you know here – sounding Off Wanda Mills. She is in a Doctoral program at Rutger’s University and she is participating in a two year research project. About the Black Atlantic – Race, Nation and Gender.

Discovery Isle CD-ROM

You already know about the Compact Disk that AT&T underwrote that’s all about our history and culture . The first Discovery Isles is getting into the schools now. The first 38 CD’s were given to Loraine Gibbs, Insular Superintendent of Schools. There will be a disks for every schools. Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday

The First Lady’s Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday Mar 29th on all three big islands. On St. John the Easter egg hunt is 9 AM – to 11 AM at the Battery. On St. Croix the Easter Egg hunt is 12 noon to 3:00 PM – at the Agricultural Fair Grounds. On St. Thomas The Easter Egg hunt is 2:00 PM – to 5:00 PM – at the CAHS School grounds.

International Women’s Month

Saturday is the last day of the Celebration of International Women’s Month – a gathering of women is on the UVI Campus at the Golf Course. The topic is My She-roes and Why I am Glad I am a Girl.

Water Island Report

The Gathering to Commemorate the Life of Walter Phillips will happen on Saturday at 4:30 PM – at Honeymoon Beach.
