Congress Passes Our Loan

The US Congress has passed the bill that has the Virgin Islands 150 million dollar loan contained within it. Both the House and the Senate passed bills that include our loan, though the bill may be vetoed by the President. A conference committee is working out differences in the two versions of the bill. We’ll keep you posted.

New Law on WAPA Bills

Governor Schneider signed a law that will make WAPA separate your water and electricity bill and keep you from being shut off on one if you are delinquent on the other. Senator Hansen wrote the bill to help people keep from losing utility services in an emergency.

St. Croix Schools Get Aid

Governor Schneider addressed concerns of St. Croix parents by hiring a nurse for the education complex and authorized hiring a school librarian. Several hundred thousand dollars worth of school supplies had been ordered from the states and should be here shortly.

Clean Up Campaign

The Clean up is in progress. Tyrone Martin of Public Works announced new enforcement of the anti-litter rules. Place all your waste in a trash container. Don’t throw trash from a car or boat, When transporting trash make sure it is covered. Keep the sidewalk clean in front of your store or house. Abandoned cars must be removed. Tyrone also thanked the prisoners who are working on the clean-up process. See, if you commit a crime and you may have to pick up trash. Also the asphalt on the waterfront highway was bleeding through and would not last, so while it is still under contract, public works is having the surface material replaced.

Marine Conservation District

Should we have a marine conservation district on the south side of St. John? There are public hearings tonight Little Theater of Williams Library in Christiansted 7 PM

New Paul M. Pearson Youth Center

You can help dedicate the new Paul. M. Pearson Gardens Youth Multi-purpose Center at 4 PM on Sunday the 17th on the Center lawn The Center will house the Police Athletic League and the VIHA Youth Replanting Program.

  • East Lions are not meeting tonight, the next meeting is March 21 – usual place
  • The St. Thomas St. John Chamber of Commerce will host Business After Hours at Tillet’s Gardens on Thursday, March 14th, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. sneak preview of the 48th Arts Alive Festival
  • We from Upstreet is meeting to socialize Friday at Petite Pump room at 6pm
  • Kean Class of 86 is meeting Sunday at Tutu Park Mall to plan a reunion and what you can do for the class of 96.
  • Virgin Islands Retired Police have a food sale at the Fort Christian parking lot on St. Patrick’s Saturday at 11 AM. There’s Sliced Corned Beef, Cabbage, Irish Potatoes and local dishes too.

Environmental Competition

Senator Donastorg and the League of Women Voters announce an Environmental Protection Agency competition open to the youth of the island. One competition is for an environmental calendar around the theme “How has environment improved in the past 25 years? The other competition is for the President’s Environmental Youth Awards that lets students in Environmental projects win awards certificate signed by the President of the USA. Entries for the calendar are due March 22 to Sen. Donastorg’s office or the League’s offices.
