Whale Whoopee
Virgin Islanders have an opportunity to see some of the largest animals ever to live on earth. Officials of the bureau of fish and wildlife and local environmentalists say they have received reports of almost daily whale sightings in the area of Sir Francis Drake Channel between the British Virgin Islands and the USVI. Whales visit the warm waters of the Caribbean during the winter months to mate and have babies. Whale watchers say they’ve seen the playful humpback, the giant Sperm whale and the relatively rare Minke whale. St. Thomas East Plans a whale Watch for March 14 for some who make the trip, it will be a once in a lifetime experience.

Status Bill
As the House of Representatives considered granting Puerto Rico the right to determine their own status and affiliation with the United States, delegate to Congress, Dr. Donna Christian Green spoke on behalf of equal consideration for all territorial options. Delegate Green said “the people of Puerto Rico have waited 100 years to be given the right to self-determination”. Lawmakers finally decided in favor of the Puerto Rico plebicite. Green’s spokesman James O’Bryan said the Congressional decision sets a precedent that may lead to similar opportunities for other U.S. territories.
St. John Arrests
Police on St. John say they arrested a fourth suspect in the string of burlgaries that have been taking place in Gift Hill, Grunswald and Fish Bay area the past few weeks. Commissioner Ramon Davila said the most recent arrest took place Wednesday afternoon, minutes before he convened a town meeting on Crime at the St. John Legislative Office. In all police officials say four people have been apprehended in connection with those robberies, more suspects are being sought
Car Auction
Auctioning used and abandoned vehicles in the Virgin Islands is proving to be both popular with the public and lucrative for the government. The Department of Property and Procurement is Planning to hold another car auction March 12 in the parking lot next to Island Laundries in Sub Base, St. Thomas. One man’s trash, when purchased for cash can become another man’s treasure. Commissioner Dean Luke says 25 percent downpayment will secure the winning bid and vehicles must be claimed within seven days.
Governor Gives the IRB Thumbs Up
Tax collectors at the Internal Revenue Bureau received praise from the territory’s chief executive, Governor Roy Schneider who paid a visit to the IRB Wednesday to witness the processing of tax returns. The Governor said he was pleased with what he saw and welcomed word that the bureau would soon introduce state-of-the-art computer software to help speed the process.
