Air Ticket Tax Needs a Full Court Press

The Delegate is doing it, so is the governor and members of the senate. They are writing to the US Congress to stop an increase in air ticket taxes. The proposed change would involve a 155% increase in ticket taxes on international flights. The letter campaign is to ask that the Virgin Islands be ticket taxes like domestic destinations, like Alaska and Hawaii. You can write to congress too.

Delegate Christian-Green Says Get the Bond Bills Passed

Delegate Christian-Green has written to the Chairman of the House Resources Committee urging that the body pass the bill that will change our public finance bonds from priority bonds to parity bonds. The bond provisions recently passed in the US Senate and a joint committee has the issue in a conference on the Tax Reconciliation Bill for 1997. The Delegate also said that Guam has asked to remove its acting governor provisions from the bill passing through the Congress.

Cemetery Care to Improve

Western Cemetery is going to get better care and some face lifting changes. Dept. of Public Works says Derek Parrilla will take over as supervisor of the facility. There will be a clean up, more records on who is where to bury family members together.

Sex Offender Bill Passes

The Senate Government Operations Committee passed legislation that will require a registry of sex offenders. The bill also calls for background checks for child care workers. There were no dissenting votes on the bill. It goes to rules, then to the full senate.

Bad News – Good news

Unemployment checks are late due to a computer glitch. The July 12th checks have been delayed. The good news is that those checks are being mailed today and tomorrow and regular mail should be back to normal for the July 22 set.

Roof – Plan B

It’s Time for Plan B in the Governor’s Roof Protection Program. A meeting of all roof contractors is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 AM – at CHAS, and on Sunday July 20 at the St. Croix Education Complex . Dean Luke says be there and be on time we have a lot of roof work to do.

School Registration Set to Begin

School registration is beginning on July 23rd at the Curriculum Center in Tutu through August 15th. To register you must bring the child, a birth certificate, proof of status in the Virgin Islands and a Virgin Islands Immunization card, proof of residence and the child’s social security number

On the sore spot report: – Oh the Sore Spot hot line rang off the hook this morning. That light rain, well it fell heavy around the Renaissance Beach Resort in Smith Bay and the low place along side the hotel wall is flooded again. Still not fixed. Come on Renaissance Beach Resort and Dept. of Public Works Can’t we please get this fixed, people are having trouble getting through the standing water.

Mapp Says Job Well Done to Lorraine Berry

First we got a long report from Lorraine Berry listing all the documents she executed while acting as Lieutenant Governor earlier this summer, then we got the letter from Mapp commending Berry on an excellent job.
