It’s Emancipation Day
149 years ago Governor Peter von Sholtern, under threat of rebellion, issued an emancipation proclamation ending slavery in the Virgin Islands. Local government offices are closed. Federal government offices are open as are most banks, supermarkets and retail stores. Tomorrow Independence Day and all government offices will be closed. The Malls will be open with reduced hours.

Emancipation Day is coming to the Disabled
The Virgin Islands Advocacy Committee will file the first of a series of territory wide law suits to enforce compliance with the American’s with Disabilities Act. Amelia LaMont of the Committee said the ADA has broad public support. This is because so many people have a personal or familial stake in supporting the right of individuals with disabilities to become full participants in our community.
Montserrat Getting Aid – – Now wait.
Relief supplies for Montserrat are flooding in. Virgin Islands residents brought in canned food, soap, diapers, hygiene products, money and even stuffed animals. Relief supplies are not being collected today or through this weekend as officials assess the needs. Relief collection will be announced next week. 07/01/97 8:57 AM
Senate Turns Back Tax Bill
The land for taxes bill sponsored by Senator Frett will stay in Committee for more work. Two other tax related bills were passed by the Finance Committee. One is sponsored by Vargrave Richards and would allow people to offset taxes with tax refunds due, and the other, sponsored by senator’s Bryan and Frett would allow a variety of methods to pay taxes due. Both now go to the Rules Committee for further work.
School News
The Dept. of Education regrets that the two week math and science summer camp for high school juniors and seniors has been canceled. CAHS 10th graders can pick up their summer reading beginning on Monday at 8:30 AM –
St. John Celebration of 4th of July
St. John Celebration of the 4th of July is roaring along. Thursday its Imaginations and Violators and on Friday the 4th of July the bands are Fusion and Jam Band. From 7 PM – to 2AM. Travelers to St. John are reminded not to park in the Red Hook Plaza Parking Area. Cars that are there beyond the hours of the St. John Celebration will be towed.
No Conch Fishing
Conch season is closed. From July 1st through Sept 30th it is illegal to catch Queen Conch. No Conch fishing in the waters around Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands

To Mark the 149th anniversary of emancipation in the Danish West Indies The National Park Service is hosting a special celebration at the Catherineberg Sugar Mill Ruins from 4:00 PM – to 6:00 PM – with musical presentation, historical interpretation and story telling.
