Bus Service on St. John – Everyone wants it.

Dept. of Public Workís experiment with bus service on St. John was a success. The bus circumnavigated St. John beginning in Cruz Bay and winding its way out to Coral Bay and back via Bordeaux Mt. In 1 hour 45 minutes with throngs of people. Tyrone Martin said this is not like the stop light project, everyone wants the bus service. He is listening to residenceís needs. Dept. of Public Works handed out 200 survey forms and will hold town meetings on the bus service in the near future.

Mapp to Washington – Save Watch Business

Lt. Governor Mapp is in Washington today giving congressional testimony about our watch industry. Timex is trying to get our special deal for the watches they make in foreign countries. Mapp says he is in DC to preserve our watch industry. Before he left, he delivered legislation to the Senate so the government can accept credit cards for payments of tax bills. He is also moving to computerize the tax assessors office. We lose millions of dollars due to the antiquated equipment used in the tax office.

While weíre on taxes, employers are reminded that you have to issue form W-2VI to your employees by the end of January. Donít use form W-2, but W-2 VI which is special for our islands. Questions Call 774-5865

Senator Gomez announced that the first meeting of the senate finance committee is scheduled for Tuesday February 4th at 10 in the Legislative Conference Room St. Thomas. Senator Hansen announced that her committee on Labor would be handling the proposed Employment Termination Law to replace the

WAPA Says PCBís all under control

WAPA announced produced more information about possible PCB contamination in Krum Bay, most of the oil that spilled in March 1996 burned at the time of the spill and left little residue. The soil below the unit was excavated and is held in a cement containment vessel.

Energy Efficiency Grants

The Virgin Islands Energy Office is beginning their Institutional Building Grant Program. The program will help energy efficiency at schools and the hospital . Administrators should apply by June 30th. Call 772-2616

Congress is Closing our Sub-Committee

Are we going to lose our Congressional oversight subcommittee. The congress may shut down the sub-committee on Native American and Insular Affairs. It means all territorial matters would be handled by the whole House Resources Committee. This would mean less oversight and fewer hurdles to cross in getting things done. Dr. Green also thinks the Bill to amend the Organic Act could get to the House by Easter.

United Way 85% Toward Goal

United Way is 85% of the way to the goal. All the major hotels have opened the doors to United Way and there is only one more to go. The Government sector is the good news guys of the day. Government offices are over 100% of the way to their goal with three more departments to go. They may hit 115%. Those Government workers are making good news for United Way

Clean Up for US!

They called from Peterborg to say Thank You to Dept. of Public Works for all the work making the roads in Peterborg look so good. One resident said he thought it was all done for the Presidentís visit, but Dept. of Public Works is still working on Peterborg and now he knows it isn’ít just for the visitors, this clean up effort is for us.
