Nick Pourzal is the Man of the Year Says Rotary 2
The Rotary Two Man of the Year is Nick Pourzal of Frenchman’s Reef. The Rotary club choose Nick as their man of the year and in honoring him they cited his struggles through the recent hurricanes, he was cited for his dedication to his staff, his policy to rehire his staff after the reconstruction of the hotel and everyone noted the magnificent job that was done rebuilding Marriott’s Frenchman’s Reef. That’s Nick Pourzal – the Man of the Year for 1998.

Adopt-A-Brick
Chamber of Commerce has a new project to beautify downtown and put your name in the sidewalk. The new campaign will repave the area around the downtown post office and its alley. You can adopt-a-brick and write 32 characters on the brick. Honor a friend, commemorate a marriage, give your family name a spot in town. The bricks cost $50 for families, $100 for businesses. Proceeds from the brick sale will buy additional bricks to finish the job. For those who read Good News Headlines and live off island, this is open to you too. You can adopt-a-brick by calling 1-340-776-0100.
Frederiksted Needs Facelift for Ceremony
Frederiksted Administrator Lawrence Bastian is calling on all of the residents of Frederiksted to work together in a program to repair, repaint and clean up Frederiksted for the Emancipation Commemoration. There is a questionnaire at his office at #2 Lagoon St. for each resident. 772-1000
Teachers Skills Set
Department of Education is pleased to announce that it has established the new minimum standard for teachers in reading, writing and mathematics. The new Praxis Examination is being used to screen potential teachers for our schools. By setting of the passing score the Department of Education completes the process called for in the Improvement Act of 1992. That’s another step to a better education for the children.
Eclipse is Today
Today is the eclipse of the sun. We will see 90% of the sun light disappear. The peak of the eclipse is between 1 o’clock and 2 o’clock. Normally if you look at he sun your eyes tell you to look away quickly, but during the eclipse the moon will cover the sun and we will have a kind of twilight in mid day. Don’t look directly at the sun during the eclipse. It could hurt your eyes. Use welders glasses, eclipse glasses or a pin hole viewer. If you look at the ground where the sun light filters through the trees, you will see images of the eclipse on the ground. Those of you with welders glasses and special viewers are encouraged to share them with your neighbors.

Carnival Food Fair Subcommittee reminds all vendors and groups that wish to participate in this years food fair need to get their applications back to the office by Friday February 27th. This years food fair is called Miss Lucia’s Treats in honor of Lucia Henley. Monsignor Askew of the Holy Family Church in Tutu reminds everyone that the 12 Steps of the Cross will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday. Veterans Councilor Julian DeJesus is on St. Thomas at Nisky Center from 8:30 AM – to 2:00 PM Friday he is on St. Croix at Estate Richmond from 8:30 AM – to 2:00 PM – * There is a meeting for all bands involved with Carnival at Carnival Committee Headquarters at 6:00 PM The topic is scheduling for the Music Fest, Brass-o’clock-Rama and the Callwood Village. In celebration of Black History Month, the CAHS Dept. of Art is sponsoring a series of special events. There are masks of African and Oceana on display in the library through the 27th St. Croix District Math Counts begins today at 9:00 AM at the St. Croix Education Complex with teams from all over the island. The event is sponsored by Mid-isle Rotary and the Department of Education.
