Hotel Association Opens Web Rates Page

The Hotel Association of St. Thomas-St. John has opened a new set of pages on the world wide web. Now the hotels and their rates are available with current information about how to plan a vacation in the Virgin Islands. Now that 25% of America has the World Wide Web at home, most visitors are checking out their destinations using the web. Now we have our rates where people can find them. Food Stamps Staff to Get Bonus

Food Stamp employees are ranked near the top nationally for the accuracy of their work. They won bonuses from the federal government for their good work but the bonuses were held up by the government financial crunch. Now after Catherine Mills resigned in protest, they are finally getting their bonuses in this week’s pay checks.

Hospital Thanks Dept. of Public Works

The Chairman of the Hospital board has a Big Thank You for the Public Works crews that did the great work that will help the hospital keep its Health Care Financing Administration certification.

WAPA Says Water Repair is Temporary

The problems with the water closed CAHS yesterday. Now WAPA says the repair is temporary and they will only deliver water by gravity feed. That means higher elevations will not have much water pressure.

St. Mary’s School To Celebrate 100 years.

The St. Mary’s School in Christiansted is celebrating 100 years of service to the community in January. To celebrate, they are seeking the oldest living alumnus of the school and they are planning a gala event January 25th at Cormorant Beach resort.

Economic Committee Passed Bills.

The Economic Committee Met yesterday and passed a bill to require Industrial Development Commission beneficiaries to have a health care plan for their employees. The committee also passed a bill to reduce the minimum age to be a real estate broker to age 18. They also passed a bill to permit charity bingo.

Governor approves After School Program Grant

The Downstreet People will have an after school program Monday through Friday from 3 to 6:00 PM – for up to 60 students now that Governor Schneider has approved a grant to support the program.

Bellows International Is Making Good News

Did you know that the sponsor for the Destination Downtown festivities is Bellows International. Tom Brunt of the Chamber of Commerce says that without Bellows many of these community events just wouldn’t happen. Bellows has been the primary sponsor of 15 events this year including Miracle on Main Street, Fall Fest, Arts in the Alley and Christmas in July. That’s Bellows with Coors, Becks and other great products making good news.

Carnival Schedule is Out

It is a little early, but the Carnival Committee released this coming Carnival schedule. This year’s theme is the Spirit of 1848 is alive in Carnival 1998. The village will honor Richard Callwood and there festivities will commence on April 4th with the Music Fest and conclude on May the 2nd Start planning now.

FEMA Gets funds, More Coming

You gotta pay the piper to call the tune. The Government announced that it is complying with a demand from FEMA to pay off part of the Hurricane Marilyn loan. We have to pay on the loan we got for the territories 10% share. Now we are in line for the last round of FEMA funds.

Water Island Report

Did you see the string of pearls in the he sky just at twilight? From Water Island, the planets are clear and strung out across the sky. From Mercury to Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. What a fabulous view. Course that doesn’t count as local news on Water Island. Everyone gets this show, it’s just that it is so clear from water island.
