Donkeys

Members of the National Biological Review and Concerned Citizens meet on St. John this morning to discuss care and protection of the islands feral donkey population. Doneys have run wild on the island since the days when the automobile made donkey transportation obsolete. The park service tries to keep their population within what they call reasonable levels but recently the donkeys have reportedly experienced a population explosion. Some creative solutions have been employed to keep their numbers down. A few years ago a group from St. Croix came to St. John to round up about 20 animals and shipped them to adopted homes. Once a year they are part of the annual donkey races held at Canageda Park in February. This year one citizen suggesting sending some of the donkeys to Haiti.
