Dredging is Coming Up

The Port Authority announced that they are going to begin a major dredging project to open the shipping channels in St. Thomas and St. John. The first step is to dredge 20,000 Cubic yards of material from the main entrance to Charlotte Amalie harbor, then they are going to clean 62,000 of dredging out of Gregory Channel and Crown Bay. They will also remove 30,000 cubic yards of material from the Creek Area of Cruz Bay St. John. The project should take 3 to 4 weeks.

Financial Recycling

The Balanced Budget Act in the US Congress includes provisions for the US Virgin Islands to repay 215 million in old 1992 debt then re-borrow the money with less collateral, that frees up some collateral. The means more money for the government to spend. This is a one time conversion of priority bonds to parity bonds and we’ll see if congress allows us to convert all our bonds.

Coral Bay has Labor Day Plans.

Plans for the Labor Day Festivities in Coral Bay St. John have been announced. The Committee has planned a cookout for Saturday August 30th from 10AM near the dugout in Coral Bay. On Sunday the 31st, there is an arts and crafts display at 2:00 PM – at the Moravian Church And there is steel pan music at 2:00 PM on Monday, Labor Day the Coral Bay Maximum Size Parade will begin at 10:00 AM – and is scheduled to continue through 10:05 unless the donkey repeats the parade route.

*Rocky Says – Lets Paddle Together.

Rocky wrote to Lorraine Berry asking to hold a meeting to resolve the budget. Lorraine says the Finance Committee Hearings should do that, she tried to get a Financial Control Board, but the Governor vetoed the legislation. Now Rocky has written back. He tells the story of two men in a boat on a river. The engine dies and they are headed toward the waterfall. One is intent on arguing over who is at fault for the dead engine,. The other says they have paddles, but the argue until the boat goes over the edge. Senator Rocky says we all have to put our hands on the paddles together. Governor Schneider says he will come to a budget summit. The Governor wrote to Senator Liburd to say he is ready to come to a budget summit. He also points out that he sent up a budget and he thinks he can make that budget work. Governor Schneider also scolded trhe Senate for not moving any revenue generating bills through – like the ATM Tax, the sale of land tax debt and gross receipts tax.

Coming Up:

UVI Small Business Development Center has a seminars to prepare contractors for bonding. Today’s class is “The Hand-on Experience with the Bond Application Process and Related Paperwork.” At the Palm Count of the Harbor View Hotel 6 to 8 PM Red Cross is looking for new volunteers and they are offering some classes to bring you in. This coming week, the Red Cross will teach disaster mental health for professionals, Administering a Disaster Operation, and Introduction to Disaster Services. Call 774-0375

Wedding Plans Changes

Bad news and Good news for Dawn Smutz and Charlie De Lugo. The bad news is that Charlie got an appendicitis and the couple has to cancel their planned wedding for Saturday August 16th at Magen’s Beach. The good news is that they got married anyway – in the hospital chapel.
