Governor Schneider Says our Bonds are Poised to be Sold.

Governor Schneider announced today that the government bonds in the amount of 541,820 million dollars have been approved for an investment grade rating and approved for sale. This set of bonds carry the lowest interest rate in the history of the Virgin Islands. 5.72 percent. Saving 11 million dollars per year in interest costs alone. The bonds were met with enthusiasm on Wall Street and there were buyers for three times the number of bonds we had for sale.

Food Fair was a treat and Now it is J’Ouvert

The Carnival is in full swing. Yesterday’s Food Fair was a real treat as thousands came out to sample the taste delights. Today we had J’Ouvert along Veteran’s Drive with wild craziness in the streets. We had a half dozen bands and their followers in the streets with mobs of people dancing to the tunes of Jam Band, Xpress Band, Imaginations Brass and all of the others.

Delegate Christian-Green Sponsors Federal Judge Tenure Bill

The delegate is calling for life tenure for Virgin Islands federal judges. The bill introduced in the house would enhance the federal courts in these island to make them more like their stateside counterparts.

Governor Schneider Camp for the Summer

Government House announced that the Governor’s summer camp for youth ages 5 to 13 will open June 16th and run for 8 weeks through August 14th with lunch and snacks. The camps on St. Croix are at Charles Emanuel and Claude O. Markoe Schools Registration is until June 5 at the Administrator’s offices. 772-1000

Food Fair Winners

Food Fair was Yesterday. We have winners. In Produce the winner Jerold Hodge, Jr. In plants, the winner is Leroy Williams. The Basket Weaving winner is Lucia Penn; in Arts & Crafts the winner is Alvin Turnbull. The Winner of Native candies is Lucia Henley who also won for cakes and pastries. Laurel Hewett Sewer won the best dressed award and the best special presentation was Sandrella Thomas.

* Barge Battle Opens

The battle over who carries passengers to St. John is escalating. Boyson Inc is trying to prevent Republic Barge Service from using the Port Authority docks in Red Hook. They got an injunction to prevent Republic from landing at the Red Hook Docks.

Road Work Today

There is road work today and tomorrow on Route 30, that’s Frenchman’s Bay Road from Beverly Hills through Donkey Hill. The Crews are out during day light hours. Motorists are asked to avoid Frenchman’s Bay road. The work will be finished by Carnival Race day. Next week we will be repaving the new Fort Mylner Intersection.

The first phase of Paradise Road project on St. Croix has begun and will continue through April 30th
