J’Ouvert is On

The Jouvert crowd is winding its way toward subbase. Where they are going to see the first of our modular classrooms. They are sitting on their wheels like trailers with and they look like they are ready to go on site and become classrooms.

Retired Police Help Out

Commissioner Davila announced yesterday that some retired officers had come forward offering to aid the active police, improve record keeping and communications. He also announced that the police had created a gun unit to intercept the flow of guns through the territory. He says that the downtown bicycle patrols are working out quite nicely.

Montserrat Aid Call

The Governor has called for volunteers to aid Montserrat. Roosevelt David is setting up a campaign center at the USO building on the waterfront starting Monday morning. If you have donations for Montserrat its Monday morning at the USO building. Also from Montserrat,

Downtown mall

Should the mall be reworked to be the Downtown mall instead of just main street? Some merchants wrote to Governor Schneider saying they want the idea thought through again – either include more streets, or exclude all traffic or try another version of the mall.

Daughter to work day

Today is take your daughter to work day. Senator Bellardo urges you to take your female child to your job. Even if it is a half day, take her to work in the afternoon. Help empower your daughter with positive role models.

Mocko Jumbie Jamboree

Remember the Mocko Jumbie Jamboree – they went to the Macy’s Parade. Well Texaco is sponsoring them in the Adults parade with music by Rowdy Massive. They are in position 9A in the Adult Parade.

Prince Edward

Prince Edward and his brother Sly Mongoose have a new cassette out. It isn’’t every day that our local royalty have fresh cassettes on the market at the time of their coronation. Look for Time Out by Prince Edward.

Winston Brathwaite: Harry S Truman Scholar

This is great news – Winston Brathwaite is the first UVI students ever selected to be a Harry S Truman Scholar. Brathwaite scholarship is worth about $30,000 to help him study law. His research on public policy on the homeless in the Virgin Islands was excellent and won him the award., That’s Winston Brathwaite’s good news. The University said there are scholarships available to local graduating seniors. Applications are due May 6th.
