New Telephone Area Code Coming

OK the word is out, We’re getting a new telephone area code. We’re leaving 809 and our new area code will be 340. Both area codes will work through June of 1998 then everyone will have to call in using 340. Vitelco got the tax breaks and all we get is a new number to call. 05/23/97 2:00 PM

The Department of Tourism launched its summer advertising campaign with a series of television ads that are being aired in the US in cities like Atlanta and Dallas where we traditionally have strong summer demand. The ads show us as breathtakingly beautiful and still American. In other Tourism News, the Department of Tourism met with 400 travel agents this week in San Juan at American Airlines annual gathering.

Not all of the visitors are Tourists

The Navy is sending two more ships. You know we have the aircraft carrier George Washington coming to visit and the Seattle another ship the day after, now the Navy says that the USS Sullivans and the USS Obannon are also coming to St. Thomas. The Obannon will be here June 4 to the 7th with a crew of 330 and the Sullivans, which is named for the five brothers who died on one ship in WW2 will be here from June 13th to the 16th with a crew of 280. Call the USO, they need volunteers to help make sure the visits are the very best.

It’s a Mountain of Money

That’s what Jerome Ringoes, an environmentalist from the US says his waste recovery companies turn landfills like Bovoni into money by recovering waste. Waste recovery is a big business. There is scrap metal, copper, and other metals. Ringoes also told the Committee on Planning and Environmental Protection that the EPA would shut down Bovoni if it was in the states. The PWD officials repeated the steps they are taking to solve the landfill problems.

Sign Shop Magazine Story

Good news from the folks at Ace Sign Studio and Bob Coates Photography. SignCraft Magazine is featuring the St. Thomas sign makers in the May June issue of their magazine and the pictures are by Bob Coates. The signs for Mahogany Run, Bluebeard’s Beach Club, Paradise Point are all in the magazine.

Memorial Day is Coming Up

Veterans will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday. There is a ceremony in St. Croix at Christiansted Wharf. On St. Thomas, the memorial program begins at Roosevelt Park at 11o’clock then a procession to the Coast Guard Dock and then on to Western Cemetery. You can hear it here on WSTA at 11:00 AM. All government offices are closed for the holiday. Schools are closed. Tutu Mall opens at 11 AM to 5:00 PM – Sunshine Mall is open from 8:00 AM – to 9:00 PM. Retail stores and supermarkets will be open. There will be a Daily News but the business office is closed. And the Good News Guy never gets a holiday, so I’ll be here.

Dept. of Public Works is working tomorrow on Dronnegen’s Gade at Hospital Line

Tomorrow morning at 8 o’clock the Dept. of Public Works crews will be working at the intersection of Dronnegens Gade knows as 7th Day Adventist Street and Hospital Line in the Polyberg area. They will have the intersection closed so take alternative routes.

In Line skating is coming to St. Croix this Saturday at the St. Croix Education Complex . It is time for National Skate Patrol Training and lessons are free to learn how to start and stop.

Good News from Harvard. Risa Nielsen, daughter of Edward and Joan Nielsen of Frederiksted is graduating from Harvard Medical School with a degree in medicine and a Master’s Degree in Public Health.
