The Rides are Open – St. Thomas

Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs * says the Carnival rides are safe and ready for the children to begin having a wonderful time. They are requiring some repairs on the little Ferris wheel, so until that is complete, it is closed. The rides have passed inspection and one more piece of Carnival is in place. 04/19/97 8:14 AM

First Homeowner on Governors program – St. Croix

Keith William’s of Estate Campo Rico is a homeowner. The Governor gave him the keys and turned William’s from a renter to a mortgage payer. William’s now owns his home and the Governor says several more home owners lined up for their homes too. Also on the fast track are 85 homes in Estate Adventure Hill. The residents are next in line to be converted from residents to home owners. 04/19/97 8:17 AM

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Leading the Way

A group of cruise lines have agreed to begin publishing their fares and include the port charges in the advertising. No more touting an artificial low price with an artificially high port fee in the fine print. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, Dolphin Majesty and Norwegian all agreed they wanted no room for allegations of misleading consumers. By agreeing to a common format for expressing Cruise line prices, consumers will be able to shop for the best value. Consumer’s Reports commended Royal Caribbean and the others for improving the travel market. 04/19/97 8:39 AM

Good Work at Dept. of Health WIC Program

The Department of Interior recently examined the Women’s, Infants and Children program run by the Dept. of Health. Is it living up to its obligations under federal grants? Good News. They got an A+ The Inspector General says Quote, “We conclude that the Dept. of Health administered the WIC program in an effective manner and in compliance with grant terms and applicable law and regulations” Unquote. The inspectors made suggestions on how to speed up of the process to get more food products here. Good work WIC!

New Visitor Center and Park headquarters on St. John

The National Park Service announced plans to rebuild the Visitor Center in Cruz Bay St. John. Open houses are planned for Monday April 21st on St. Thomas and St. John to show the plans to the public. Construction will begin in 1998 and be completed in the spring of 2000 04/18/97 11:33 AM

Turpentine Road reconstruction is beginning.

Dept. of Public Works is beginning the work on Turpentine Road in Nadir. The work will be done in stages, using federal highway funds and will include improvements to drainage, a new bridge, and realigning the road. The Governor says he wants major improvements to the major guts adjacent to residential communities in flood plain areas.

Take the Carnival Days Off

The Governor authorized administrative leave for non essential government on Wednesday afternoon for Food Fair And all day J’Ouvert Thursday and for Friday’s Children’s Parade. A finance office official says this will cost 3 million dollars in lost work time.

St. John and Coral Bay Report

It was news when the St. Croix Business community got two police bicycles for the police. Now James Penn on St. John is doing the same there. James Penn has donated the resources to the police to support one more police bicycle on St. John. That’s Good News A meeting of the St. John Action Committee on Monday April 21 at the Club Eclipse in Cruz Bay and the guest speaker is Senator Almando Rocky Liburd Young ladies of St. John ages 9 through 18, the ladies of Senator Liburd’s office are putting together a youth group and you are invited to a come by the St. John office behind the Sprauve school to join.   • Dept. of Public Works is resurfacing Havensight road today and tomorrow from the Mall up the hill to the new stone wall. Avoid Havensight Road from 7:00 AM – to 6:00 PM. Use and alternate route. 
  • Saturday Elskoe and Associates are meeting at Arian’s Restaurant on Saturday at 7:00 AM for a prayer breakfast. 
  • Retired Police Organization are meeting tomorrow at Percy’s Bus Stop at 10:00 AM 
  • Lions and Leos of Zone 2A are meeting Saturday at Walkers by the Sea at 8:00 AM for the workshop and Zone meeting is at 10:00 AM 
  • Carnival Watersports Day is Sunday The boating public is reminded that Sunday from 8:00 AM – to 4:00 PM – will be Carnival Watersports Day and there is a race course in the harbor. Boats that are not involved with the races are not permitted in the he race area and enforcement will be there to keep the race course open for the events. 04/19/97 8:32 AM

Portuguese Swedish or Tagalog – if you are fluent in a second language, the hospital would like to know who you are in case they need an emergency translator. There is no obligation and all you have to do is call so they know who you are. You could save someone’s life just being able to do a quick translation over the phone. The new Water Island Ferry boat schedule is available from the ferry captain. It has a map of Water Island on the back. Someone left the beach light turned on after their party last night.
