Mercedes Rodriguez is the Queen
The Virgin Islands/Puerto Rico Friendship Pageant was held over the weekend and Mercedes Rodriguez was crowned Miss VI-PR. The Friendship Day comes up October 15th and honors the Hispanic community’s contribution to Virgin Islands society.

Cunard and P&O Join FCCA
The Florida Caribbean Cruise Association announced that two cruise lines have joined their association. Cunard is the parent of the Queen Elizabeth 2, Royal Viking Sun, Vistafjord and Sea Goddess 1 and 2. P&O Is a British line that sails to over 100 countries including the Virgin Islands. The new ships is good news, but the president of the Cruise Association wrote the Governor, warning that increasing the passenger tax will create a negative impact on cruise tourism. He says St. Thomas has always been a “must” on Caribbean itineraries, but that many lines will exclude St. Thomas in favor of other destinations with lower taxes.
Patrick Henry is Back from Aruba
He is our own Patrick Henry, 10 year old Patrick Henry the fourth grader from Evelyn Williams School on St. Croix. There were thousands of contestants in the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine essay contest and the contestants came from all over the region for the final stage of the contest. Only Patrick got to read his essay to the overflow crowd. In addition to a special plaque and a $2000 scholarship, Conde Nast and American Airlines will fly Patrick Henry to London in November for the World Travel Mart.
World Disaster Reduction Day
Remember fire drills in school? . Now we get a whole day to hold an earthquake drill.. October 8th has been designated by VITEMA as Disaster Reduction Day the day to hold an earthquake drill. The idea is to Duck Cover and Hold when the pretend earth quake occurs and thinking about what you’d do in a real earthquake. Next Wednesday at 10:00 AM.
Labor Seminar today
The Dept. of Labor is hosting am employer Information Seminar tomorrow on St. Thomas at Palm Count of the Harbor View Hotel. The seminar is open to all employers and will teach them what every employer should know about the rules and regulations of the Dept. of Labor. If you need to know about workman’s compensation, OSHA, and discharge laws, health and safety, this is a seminar for you. 692-9390.
Good news from afar
C.G. Walwyn-Houston writes through the e-mail to tell us that he just passed the promotional examinations for Sergeant and Detective in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. He says he was a member of the Virgin Islands Law Enforcement Explorers of St. Croix. With the original crew of 1973. That’s a native son making good news far from home.

Wednesday, October 1 is the 119th anniversary of the Frederiksted Fireburn. A ceremony is planned for October 1 at Budhoe Park. Wednesday is also the day the IRB will brief tax payers on outstanding real property taxes. They will be at the Territorial Court from 11:00 AM – to 2:00 PM.

Today is also the first day of the classes for Taxi drivers on St. John. The class is tonight at 6:30 PM – at the Julius Sprauve School. The VITAAL classes in customer service continue tomorrow on St. Thomas at the Taxi Association Club House in Contant and on Saturdays on St. Croix at Hotel Carvelle. You can be a better ambassador call 776-2118.The class is free. The Environmental Association of St. Thomas-St. John * Education Committee is meeting this evening at 5:30 PM – at Pizza Hut in Wheatley Shopping Center. All science teachers, geography teachers, people interested in environmental education please come to this meeting. Tomorrow there’s a demonstration of how to make salt fish and beef pate at the Annaberg Historic Site with Mrs. Dickinson. From 10:00 AM – to 1:00 PM.
