Governor Presents Washington Agenda

Transportation issues were foremost on the mind of Governor Roy Schneider on his recent visit to the nation’s capitol. He held a press conference Monday morning to present the results of his trip. The governor said he went to explore bond proposals for construction and facility repairs. While in Washington Governor Schneider also spoke with Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater about the need for more airline seats headed for the Virgin Islands and about proposed expansion of the Henry Rolshen Airport Runway. He also spoke with officials about restructuring FEMA loans and tax relief.

Miss USVI

There’s a new Miss USVI, Leah Webster outshone three other contestants to win the title and go on to the Miss Universe contest in Honolulu, Hawaii. First runner up, Marsha Brathwaite, was also chosen Miss Intellect. Contestant Sonia Nellie won Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic and also won the Personal Development award from the Lions Club.

Science Bowl

Last week, it was the Math Counts Competiton. This weekend high school students competed for honors in the Science Bowl. All Saints beat out Antilles School for first place, St. Joseph’s school took third place. How did All Saints Team One do it? By knowing how many moons spin around the planets Jupiter and Saturn and being able to name the process that turns liquid food oils into solids. How well would you do if you took part in the Science Bowl?

Violence March

Meanwhile, over on the island of St. Croix they held a march against violence. Scores of people, many young, marched from the old Senate Building to western Christainsted. One young student said evoked the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King who preached non-violence. Among the public officials addressing the marchers at the end of the march were prisoners of the Golden Grove Correctional Facility who are trying to spread the word that jail is not the way to go.
