Delegate Christian-Green to Run Again

The delegate, Dr Delegate Christian-Green announced that she will seek a second term as our delegate to the US House of Representatives. She has the backing of the top black congressmen. Including the 50 member black caucus and the support of key democrats in the he US Congress. The delegate says one of her priorities will be funding for farmers and their home loans.

Danish Tourism Office is Back in the Black

Our Danish Tourism Office is back after a year of running on enthusiasm and hope. For a year, Torben Eirby has been operating a Virgin Islands tourism promotion office in Denmark on his own personal funds and now the Department of Tourism has sent the back pay and awarded him a contract for the coming year too. Danish Tourism is up 500 per cent since Torben has been operating the office.

No Cavalry Coming to Save us.

At Lorraine Berry’s Youth Symposium this weekend, one speaker said. “There is no cavalry coming to save us. We have to fix our problems ourselves.” Other speakers credited the youth symposium with making a difference in stopping potentially violent situations in the schools. This years essay Contest winners were Ruby Mason in the University Division, Laurie Ryan of Saints Peter and Paul in the High School division, and Shermer Joseph of Addelita Cancaryn Junior High School in the Jr. High School division.

Easter Regatta

International yacht racing returns to St. Thomas over the Easter Weekend . The 25th Annual Rolex Cup Regatta this year includes a new division of fleets to provide larger boats with longer windward leg course and more open ocean sailing. The Rolex Cup sponsored by Rolex of Geneva, Switzerland is the third and final leg of the Caribbean Ocean Racing Triangle series, increasing the competitive nature of the race.

Miss Big and Beautiful Crowned

The crowd at the Reichhold Center for the Performing Arts was big and beautiful and so were the candidates for the title of Miss Big and Beautiful. Elmira Rouse took the top title with Roxanne Whitfield as first runner up and Andrea Quitel as second runner up among the six contestants.

Labor Says Hire Locally – Hire Legally

Commissioner Carmelo Riviera of the Dept. of Labor is launching a new public awareness campaign to encourage employers to hire locally and hire legally. They will be conducting a public education campaign to make sure that local employers know the rules about hiring local residents. Hiring has become very technical and the Dept. of Labor is trying to make sure that local companies are in compliance with the law.

Big Thank You from Addelita Cancaryn Junior High School

Senator Roosevelt David joined Mr. Neil Weiss of Vitraco mall and George Blackhall of B&W Realty Investment to put a new carpet in the library of Addelita Cancaryn Junior High School. Ivy Williams says she is pleased to have the new carpet and this is another case of the business community coming to help the schools.

St. Croix Gets Chemical Report

There is a new art display on St. John at Mongoose Junction. The photos are the work of Constancy Wallace and feature the island of St. John. Her photos of Flamboyant Trees in Trunk Bay are staggering and the whole display is in The gallery called Bajo el Sol in Mongoose Junction.

Calendar

Committee on Government Operations is meeting at 6:00 PM in the Senate chambers on St. Thomas to hold a public hearing on the numbered seats topic. The Rules Committee meeting scheduled for today has been postponed to March 12th. Virgin Islands Agriculture Education will hold a seminar this weekend on St. Croix on reinventing Agriculture education in the year 2020. They are looking for representatives from St. Thomas to attend the conference. The Mathias Family as a family reunion today at 5:30 PM at the Memorial Moravian Church Fellowship Hall Ivanna Eudora Kean High School PTSA meets 6 p.m. at the school library CAHS Band Boosters are meeting at 5:30 PM at the Music Suite.

Eight Women Honored

The Lutheran Church of the Reformation honored eight women on the move on Saturday with a prayer breakfast. Zandra Ritter, Jasmine F. Williams, Jacqueline Lewis, Shirleen Williams Lee, Mable Melchoir, Merle Joshua, Rochelle J. Todman and Lillian Moolenaar. Were the honorees.

Water Island Report
