Do you know about the Coal Ladies?

On Sunday there was a non-sectarian interfaith service to open International Women’s Month in the Virgin Islands. Pastor Judith Spindt of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation led a litany of women’s life and the students from UVI enacted the daily work of the coal carrying women in the late 1800’s. Governor Opens new Parking Lot

The Governor cut the ribbon opening a new parking lot in front of Property and Procurement offices in Subbase. The new lot eliminates a lot of overgrown brush and debris. The overgrown lot has a fresh surface, entries, exits and no mud or trash. 03/01/97 8:59 AM

Montserrat Making Good news of Volcano

Some people can make good news out of bad. On Montserrat there is a renewed effort to rebuild and create a new tourism business based on the volcano itself. With 40 Million in aid, Montserrat is going to rebuild its infrastructure and a new pier on the north shore in case Plymouth has to be abandoned. A new focus of tourism advertising will capitalize on Montserrat’s name recognition value around the world. 03/03/97 9:49 AM

Trash Deadline Tomorrow

The trash haulers say they’ll stop hauling trash on Tuesday. They want to be paid for trash they’ve been hauling for months. Have you begun to consider what you will do with your trash if the haulers stop taking it away? 03/03/97 7:28 AM

Weight’s and Measures Week

This is weights and measures week in the Virgin Islands. We use the scales in the food store, our gas pumps measure how much gas we buy. There are dozens of scales and measures in our lives and this is the week that we recognize the stability these measures give our lives. Peter Holmberg is a winner.

Over the weekend, Peter Holmberg of our America’s Cup Challenge took first place in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit competition. This is March, that’s the month of the Rolex Regatta, so we get to watch Peter Holmberg’s team race in our own waters. 03/03/97 9:33 AM

Red Cross Ball

Write this date down, March 22 is the date of the Red Cross ball. This gala affair will be the event of the season. Call for reservations 779-2933. The National Red Cross was recently lauded as the best run charity in the country. Their audits are all excellent.

Foreign Language Week at Addelita Cancryn Junior High School

This is foreign language week at Addelita Cancryn Junior High School. Today the French class is going to the Camille Pissarro Exhibit. Tomorrow there is a bilingual poetry recital. On Wednesday, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School has a simulated Caribbean market and Thursday there is a tasty treat of English, French and Spanish delights.
