230 Received Degrees at University of the Virgin Islands

There are 230 fresh graduates from University if the Virgin Islands. Fifteen graduated summa cum laude. Thirty Three (33) earned Master’s degrees. Lanny Hobson took the Trustees Graduate Fellowship, graduating summa cum laude with a 3.97 grade point average. Justin Boyce graduated with a masters in educaton with a full scholarship. He is headed to a doctoral degree in counseling psychology. Another star is Taetia Phillips who was an early admissions student from CAHS. She is headed into a doctoral program in microbiology.

Sal and Val Party

The Governor held a shindig for the salutatorians and valedictorian from all the local graduating classes. His pool side party was the gathering for the top of the top.

Hess Hiring

Here’s great news. Hess is hiring 500 people to work on overhauling its fluid catalytic cracking unit. The oil company has hired taxes Brown and Root to perform the overhaul and they will be the lead contractor. There are jobs for electricians, pipefitters, welders, mechanics, millwrights and boilermakers There are 500 jobs.

Anti Litter and Beautification Campaign

Anti Litter and Beautification Campaign held an orientation for 246 High School and college students who will work this summer in a clean up effort. Drivers, please keep your eyes open for these young people working on our roads.

VITELCO

VITELCO is sponsoring a free tennis education program for boys and girls ages 8 to 18. This is at the Stouffer’s hotel. Rackets and balls are provided. Call 775-4520 to sign up.

  • The Senate rules committee is meeting in St. Croix at the Markoe school auditorium to address the issue of taxi industry.
  • Beautician Association has a meeting for barbers, manicurists and beauticians today at 7 PM at Percy’s Bus Stop.
  • Finally from St. John Dry Closet is the St. John thrift shop. The other night Dry Closet sponsored a fund raiser. The idea was to thank the many volunteers of the Church of the Brethren who have done so much to help rebuild St. John.

This also from St. John, the Queen was crowned over the weekend. Emoliere Williams began her reign on Saturday. She wore a smashing gown with more than 4000 beads on a fitted top and a flared chiffon skirt than ran all the way to the floor. The crowd was hers right from the start.
