UVI Graduates Sign Language Class

Twenty five individuals took a step toward communicating and aiding our hearing impaired, they graduated from the sign language class offered by the University Affiliated Program. That’s one more step toward better communication.

Delegate Christian-Green Supports Juvenile Crime Prevention Act

Dr Christian-Green joined her democratic colleagues supporting HR 1818 the Juvenile Crime Control and delinquency Prevention Act. She says this is a better approach to juvenile crime rather than the incarceration approach that appeared in other passed bills. The bill would bring $75,000 to the Virgin Islands

Governor Gets 2 Million for Community Development Block Grants

Government House announced today that the Governor has secured 2 million dollars for our community development block grants. Some of the recipients include $125,000 for the Department of Education to develop the Gramboko building for education and training, $250,000 to build a victims of domestic violence shelter in ST John. $295,000 to rehabilitate the Dorsch Theater on St. Croix. There are small grants too like $77,000 for the Downstreet People46,000 for life saving training and 25,000 for computer training for the disabled. 07/18/97 11:31 AM Meanwhile the Dept. Housing Parks and Recreation has applied to the energy office for 2.1 million dollars in federal funds for upgrading electrical systems, and energy conservation in public housing.

Plan B – Roof Program Advances

They came to hear plan B on the Roof Replacement program. 2 dozen contractors heard that FEMA has funds to insure payment to contractors on the Governor’s re-roofing program. We’ll have details at Noon.

Virgin Islands Posse Softball Team Victorious

On Sunday July 20th the Virgin Islands Posse regained the County Championship In front of 50 loud, screaming Virgin Islanders, the Posse won the Maryland Summer County Championship with two victories over the 2nd place “Heat” by the score of 17-9 and 21-8. Once again regaining the claim as one of the most feared teams in Washington Metropolitan Area.

Senate Finance Committee Hearings

The Senate Finance committee is beginning their hearings on next year’s proposed budget. They will be meeting at 10:00 AM – in St. Thomas. The hearings will continue on Tuesday

Did you donate Blood the last time? No, well you have a chance to do it this coming week. July 22 at Lutheran Church St. John, July 23rd at Nisky Center St. Thomas and July 24th at the Federal Building in St. Thomas. What happened to the Rain? We were expecting rain from Tropical Depression #5, so I bought grass seed and seeded the front yard dirt, did we get rain? No.
