The Folklife Festival was a HIT
There were four days with a little bit of everything. Music, storytelling, food, crafts, even broom making. The Folklife festival was hailed by all as a fabulous event. A Discovery Channel film crew was on site and took in the visual delights of the folklife festival. Their material will air on a TV show later this fall.
Celebrity Weekend in Paradise a Hit too.
Celebrity Weekend in Paradise was also a big hit. Nearly a dozen performers participated in the rap session at Charlotte Amalie High School. In the question and answer section, the kids wanted to know how to seek fame and fortune. The answer came back loud and clear. Education.
Funds to Stop Violence Against Women.
Congressman Victor Frazer announced that the Virgin Islands had received a federal grant of more than half a million dollars for program to stop violence against women. The program will strengthen the law enforcement in cases of domestic violence, computerize the links to the courts and to service providers.
Government Newspaper
Government House has its own newspaper now – The Government House Bulletin will appear every two weeks with all the news about the government without the spin of the newspaper or radio editors. The first issue is out and it is wall to wall with news from Government House. Cost and distribution have not been discussed.
Water Island Transfer – Estate Profit Development
The Dept of Interior is preparing the final details of the transfer of Water Island to the Territory. The land sales are being set up and the transfer of all the common area to the territory. Now, the the topic is about renaming the island. There is a move afoot to rename the island when it is transferred to the territory. In other land news, Estate Profit in St. Croix is going to be subdivided and starting this week, water lines, sewer lines and roads are being installed.
Community Motors – New Honda Acura Dealer
Today is the first day theat Community Motors in St. Thomas will be the dealer for Honda and Acura cars. Bayard Motors is no longer the Honda dealer and customers are reminded to come to Community Motors by the airport for sales, service, parts and warranty work on Honda and Acura cars.

St. Thomas weather, sunny, 20% chance of rainbows, Highs around 90, Winds east 10 mph. St. Croix has a 40% chance of rain this afternoon. We have no major storms on the horizon.
On the Calendar:
- Today is the deadline to file applications for liquor licenses with the DLCA
- Independent Citizens Movement of St. Thomas will meet at 5:30 at ICM Headquarters on Kronprinsens Gade
- Virgin Islands Port Authority is closing the parking lot in St. John on Monday and Tuesday to repaint the stripes.
- Tomorrow: Savan water users will have a water outage from 9 to 6 PM as WAPA replaces the old pumps.
- Building 20 of Estate Tutu Apartments is almost ready to occupy and the pre-occupancy orientation is scheduled for tomorrow at 9 AM
- Assistive Technology workshop to aid parents and caregivers of people with disabilities is tomorrow at 6 PM at the UVI St. Thomas Campus
