What is a Beacon School?

Valerie George is getting the Beacon School off the ground with an announcement about the role of Beacon Schools in the Virgin Islands. The idea of a Beacon school is a school based community organization to be a safe haven where learning is free and enjoyable. The Beacon School is a model of how a school can operate. The first Beacon School Celebrity Golf Tournament is coming up August 17th.

Community Development Block Grant Squabble

With 2.1 million dollars in Community Development Block Grant Funds to allocate, there is lots of room for squabbling over who gets what. The Governor already has a list of his planned grants for DPNR to use for community construction projects. The senate held public hearings last week on St. Thomas and tonight they have more on St. Croix. At 6:00 PM –

Roof Program in Full Swing

You can hardly miss all the roof activity around the island. It seems like eternity, but the Governor’s roof program is constructing 60 roofs all over the territory this week with 140 more in the cue.

Holmberg Wins Two in a Row

Peter Holmberg of our Virgin Islands America’s Cup Challenge took the top spot in the Finnish sail boat races. Coming on the heels of a victory in Italy, Holmberg is making a mark in the Grade One Match Racing.

GERS Retirement Loans

The government employees retirement system announces the end of the moratorium on processing loans to retirees. That means that beginning next Monday, August 18. GERS loan applications will be available Monday through Wednesdays 8 to 3:00 PM at the GERS buildings on St. Thomas or St. Croix

The United Way of St. Croix has a new car and the price is right. Antilles Automotive donated the vehicle to United Way and St. Croix Insurance donated full insurance coverage too. United Way is 75% of the way to their $3 million dollar goal and the vehicle will help the staff go to meet with their sponsors. You can help United Way too, call 773-058.

Will Lewis Lane Construction Continue?

The Environmental Association got a court order to stop the construction at Lover’s Lane and Long Bay Road. Now DPNR has filed a motion to have the action dismissed.

United Way of St. Croix has a full Board of Directors meeting on August 11 at Orange Grove Business Center in Golden Rock at 5:30 PM – Red Cross is offering a series of mini workshops. Fran Talbot Making Good News

Fran Talbot is making good news. She is the school nurse at the Julius Sprauve school on St. John and Johnson and Johnson Foundation’s Live for Life Program sent her to a substance abuse prevention program at Rutgers University. She was one of 34 nurses across the country selected to participate in the program. That’s Fran Talbot making Good News
