Cyril E. King Day in the Virgin Islands

The Governor has declared this day to honor the late Cyril E. King on his birthday. At the ceremony at the airport, Liston Davis observe the 76th birthday of Governor Cyril King by honoring the late governors wife and daughter. The Governor, flanked by an honor guard laid a wreath at the monument to Cyril King at the airport. 04/07/97 2:40 PM

United Way hit 107% of the goal.

The United Way has finished the count and they have received 107% of the goal they set – we were trying to raise 450, thousand dollars and they actually have $482,438.78 in pledges. That’s goal plus. Way to go United Way. 04/07/97 2:54 PM

Estate Welcome Bins to go.

Marise James to Be Liaison on St. Croix

Governor Schneider has appointed Marise James to fill the job that Senator Roosevelt David used to have. Attorney James will serve the Governor as legal council and liaison with the business community.

Jobs for Welders

There are job openings on St. Croix with the Pitt Des Moines Company at the Hess plant. They re looking for six skilled heliarc welders who can work on heavy wall carbon steel piping. They pay is $16.25 per hour. Call 692-3158.

VITEMA is hosting Earthquake Conferences

I’m just back from the VITEMA workshop on Earthquake preparedness. We live on the Anegada Fault, and active earthquake fault. Our area is overdue for a major earthquake. There are things you can do to prepare your home for an earthquake. First identify the earthquake hazards in your home. and make them less hazardous. Framed pictures should be wound twice around the nail so they don’t fall when they shake. The Earthquake preparedness seminars continue tomorrow on St. John. Thursday at VITEMA Offices on St. Croix.

Coral Bay Report

The Guy Benjamin School Steel Band is getting ready to take part in the St. Thomas Children’s Day Parade for the first time ever. Vitelco and Rastafrian Dynasty are supporting the effort to bring the whole band to St. Thomas for Carnival. That’s what’s happening in Coral Bay St. John.

Property and Procurement Auctioning Cars

The Property and Procurement Dept. is going to hold an auction on Thursday to sell off some motor pool cars. You can see the cars any morning this week at the motor pool in Subbase and at public works in Subbase. The Auction starts Thursday at 10:00 AM

Essay Contest

It’s time for the annual essay contest sponsored by Conde Nast. This year it is the 10th anniversary essay. The theme is My Islands Most Extraordinary View. Teachers this is a great writing opportunity for children under the age of 12. Write 250 words describing the most extraordinary view. The first event of Carnival opened the season and the Prince and Princess have been selected. In a splashy display of costumes, music, song and dance the candidates strutted their stuff and sang their heart s out. In the end the judges choose Tanya Mitril age 9 and Shomari Maynard of Joseph Gomez Elementary School and they were sponsored by Diamond’s International. That’s Shomari and Tanya’s Good News,
