It’s the President’s Dog…

President Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Chelsea and first dog Buddy are vacationing comfortably in the St. Thomas White House in Peterborg. They did not venture out very much on their first day in paradise – except the president’s dog, The Presidents Labrador puppy got his first chance to swim in Magen’s Bay and then the President tried unsuccessfully to get the dog to fetch. Buddy, didn’t get it and would not fetch. No other news from the St. Thomas White House today. No, they didn’t go out last night.

Land to go to Park

It is easily one of the ugliest parcels of property in the area around Ramada in the Long Bay Area. I’m talking about the square parcel that runs from Vitraco Mall to Long Bay road. It is overgrown with weeds and full of trash. Now the owner, Rosalee K. Stahl of New York, has donated that two acre parcel to the Friends of the Virgin Islands National Parks. The parcel is thought to be worth 1.5 to 1.7 million dollars making it one of the largest gifts to the park ever. No word yet whether the Friends of the park will develop the land or sell it or make it into a park or include it in the Ramada development. .

Edwin Crouch was a reporter at the Daily News for years. He also helped start the Virgin Islands Business Journal. Then he went to work for Jeffery Prosser and Innovative Communication. And now Prosser has appointed Edwin Crouch to the editorial board of the Daily News. So Crouch rises through the ranks from reporter to owners representative. Makes you wonder if we’ll see any editorials about his former bosses.

United Way Hits 69%

The United way has now got 69% of this year’s goal in hand. That’s $330,693. And we have news that the churches, non-profit and fraternal organizations division beaded by Wingrove and Muriel Fenton is at 196% of their goal. There are 29 days left in United Way campaign. Have you made your pledge.

Festival Parade – Short and Sweet

Hundreds of spectators lined the parade route yesterday to see the annual children’s parade. There were 50 troupes in yesterday’s parade starting at the Claude O. Markoe School and running to Fort Frederick. The top steel pan band was the entry from the Central High School. Other performers included the steel pan orchestra from the Housing Authority and from Pan Connections.

On the Calendar

Today is the 16th annual Three Kings Mile Road Race beginning at 10:00 AM. The race will start at the Markoe School and finish at Fort Frederick. On the St. Croix festival calendar, today is the Adult parade in Frederiksted beginning at 10 AM.

Disasters Down in 1997

Here’s Some good news you might not have heard anywhere else. The number of disasters for 1997 was at an all time low. The “Munich Re” reinsurance company keeps track of big disasters. They say there were only 530 “large loss events” in the world in 1997 compared to a normal year with 600 big disasters. The good news for the insurance business is they only paid out 4.5 billion in damage claims in 1997 compared with 9 billion in 1996. There’s occasional good news in disasters.

There is so little news from the President’s vacation in Paradise that the pool of reporters are quoting the Good News Headlines. Reuters news agency used the Good News Headlines Special report for the President in their story. So WE are making the good news here today. No, the President did not come to Water Island – yet.

It’s your Good News! You tell us and we’ll tell everyone.
