UVI is Honoring the Best of the Best
On Sunday UVI will honor the best of the best at a ceremony at Reichhold Center. The students are being honored for their mental tenacity in overcoming the hurricane, the recovery, the altered schedules and they still maintained straight A averages. This year, Jean Francios-Sonson and Tejumade Clarke took the Barnett Frank Award for their perfect grades. Artvel Tyson and Kesha Hodge are the Thurgood Marshall Scholars, Vercilia Sadio won the West Indian Company Scholarship, and Keisha Culpepper and Merger Nisbett who took the VI Rum Scholarship. Good news Scholars.
Balanced Budget
The Governor sent his 1997 budget to the Legislature. On time and balanced. The spending plan is called ‘Recovery through Restraint’ and requires that we engage in revenue enhancements to bring the budget into balance. The challenge is to do more with less.
Stand for Children
The American Federation of Teachers is supporting the national Stand for Children Day tomorrow. Thousands of AFT members, leaders and their families are poised to arrive in Washington DC to urge lawmakers to place the welfare of children at the top of the national priorities.
How Many Storms?
Back in January the experts said we’d have 5 major storms this year, now they say 11 named storms, 8 will be hurricanes and two will be intense storms. Tomorrow is the first day of Hurricane Season – Vinnie Mohanani says Red Cross is ready to aid you if we have another storm. Are you ready? Do you have – batteries, food stocks, spare water jugs and a working radio? Oh, and take a few minutes this weekend to to test your generator.
Turpentine Run Road
Turpentine Run Road is getting a facelift. The area around the road has been threatened by floods and the work will widen the road, construct a levy and build a new bridge.
Conflict Resolution Seminars
Congressman Frazier is sponsoring seminars in Conflict resolution for the residents of the VI. The seminar is next Thursday June 6th at 8 AM at Saints P&P School and on STC June 7 at the Curriculum Center. These seminars will teach teachers, nurses, law enforcement personnel and others how to deal with conflicts effectively and constructively.

- AC Jr High School Musical Organization meeting at 5:30 at the school library
- St. John community is invited to a safe boating fun day at Hawksnest Bay from 8 AM to 4 with boat rides, safety tips, snacks, refreshments, and music.

Who are the hospitality heros? Dr. Edgell Commissioner of Tourism says “A hero is someone who has disregarded his or her own ambitions to pursue the needs of others even though the odds are sometimes insurmountable.” At the close of Tourism month, the Department honored the people it calls the heros of our tourism industry.
