There Could Be A Breakthrough In Gas Prices

Senator Holland Redfield says he has been continuing his investigation into the price of propane gas and gasoline. In meetings yesterday Redfield met with the Presidents of the St. Thomas propane gas companies and Redfield says he is expecting a major breakthrough in gas pricing.05/02/97 8:50 AM *

Education and the Teachers need a breakthrough too

The teachers union and the administration are beginning the annual fight over how many days of school the children get. The union wants binding arbitration. Liston Davis says, ” the sticking point isn’t the number of days, but whether they are paid as regular days or extra days.” They are haggling over ten days.05/02/97 8:50 AM *

Graduation today

It wasn’t the University, or the high school, but it was a graduation. Commercial Security Services has a graduation ceremony going on right now at the Carib Beach Resort through 11:30. The security company is graduating a new class of trainees for security work. Commercial security is at 774-5000

Dutch Navy is visiting

The Dutch Navy vessel Dolphin is coming to Crown Bay today with a crew of 11 officers and 54 men, they are here through the weekend. 05/02/97 8:50 AM*

Moot Court is Meeting

In an opening speech at the Moot Court, The Gov. declared all the students winners. He praised the students for the diligence, hard work and competitiveness. The debate centers over the issue of prayer in the schools. *

Clean Up Time After Carnival

Dept. of Public Works is doing a spectacular cleaning job at the Fort Christian Parking Lot today. There is a lot of upgrading going on as well. Wait until Monday, the lot will be back. *05/02/97 8:50 AM

We have Winners

The Junior Statesman Summer School competition is over. And thirteen students from the Education Complex St. Croix have been selected to participate. Melanie Camacho won a full scholarship to the Yale University session and Kishma Cruz has a partial scholarship for the program. Akilah Belle, Joya Joseph, Janelle Rossington and Qiahni Williams will go the session at Princeton University this summer. *

We’ve had Brush fires.

We have dry conditions. Everyone needs to be extra careful with fire. Get the grass cut low. Add a fire break near the edge of your property. Be very careful with outdoor cooking. cigarette butt must be disposed of safely. Report any smoke you see immediately. There is a fire ban in effect – no open fires anywhere.

Maud Proudfoot Drive Dedication on Monday

Monday is the day when Governor Schneider will dedicate Maud Proudfoot Drive. The public is invited to this dedication.

Water Island Report

Water Island born Shane Hawes has a bureaucratic nightmare and the boy is only a few weeks old. Being born at home requires significantly more paperwork for the parents in order to get a birth certificate. The baby born on Water Island and the first modern birth on that island still doesn’t have a birth certificate.
