New Businesses in 1997
Here’s some great news. The Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs issued new businesses licenses to 551 new enterprises in 1997. 64 new retail shops, 73 trucking companies, 41 new commercial fishermen, 36 secretarial businesses, 48 vendors, 19 repair shops, 3 new lawyers and 1 new audiologist, We even got two new tattoo parlors. New business, that’s good news. Oh and this is just in, there is a 10% surtax for Virgin Islands corporations.

No Development for Hans Lollik – for now
The third circuit court of appeals upheld the CZM commission in a decision to stop permits for the development of Tamarind Resort on Hans Lollik island. The developers can come back with a new proposal for the 500 acre or sell it for about 10 million dollars, but for now, it will remain undeveloped.
Agriculture Conference Today
The farmers of the VI are gathering today at a conference to reinvent agriculture for the year 2020. They will be hearing from all the officials involved with agriculture and from experts from all over America. The gathering is at St. George Botanical Garden instead of Hibiscus Hotel. The territories veterinarian is going to NY to attend a special two week class to help her identify foreign diseases that could effect our livestock. This coming week is Agriculture week in the Virgin Islands.
Attorney General Julio Brady Says Democratic Officer Ouster Invalid.
The Attorney General issued an opinion that the Democratic Party acted improperly when it ousted three officers who were holding jobs in the Schneider Administration. The Attorney General said the party has to follow its own rules and the positions must be filled by proper elections. The officials had been elected and the party can’t change that without electing new officers through the proper process.
Boy Scout Roof Off and On
The team of contractors who are working on the Boy Scout Waterfront building have taken off the roof and put on the new in record time. It’s over, the Boy Scout building is safe and secure again. A Big Thank You to all the contractors. The ribbon cutting is coming up on Tuesday.
New President at the Hotel Association
The St. Thomas St. John Hotel Association has promoted Richard Doumeng to the presidency taking over from Robert Siefert who left the Association to work in the Tourism Dept. Doumeng has been the first Vice President of the Association and will fill out Seifert’s term until 1999.
Watch Out Taxi Drivers
The Dept. of Public Works announced that it has asked the police and the taxi commission to crack down on taxi cars illegally picking up passengers in the VITRAN bus stops. They say the bus service may not be up to full strength, but it is safe, comfortable, fully equipped and comfortable. And they want to stop the practice of taxi drivers raiding VITRAN riders.

There is a meeting for all the people who volunteered to be judges in the Communication Arts Show at 5:30 PM in the Legislative Conference Room The showcase takes place on March 20th at E. Benjamin Oliver School League of the British Virgin Islands invites all British Virgin Islanders living in the eh US Virgin Islands to come hear the political party platforms of all the politicians vieing for office in the future. The meeting is March 13 at 6:00 PM µ. 6:30 PM Rigidims Festival Troupe will meet at 6:30 PM at Midland Bar and Restaurant topplan the freedom under the stars party. 7:00 PM µ Federation of St. Croix Taxi Associations will hold a general meeting at the new Drive in at 7:00 PM
