Gov on St. John Says Get this Done

The Gov held the first of a series of town meetings – this one on St. John where 100 residents crowded the Cruz Bay Bandstand with topics of all sorts. Abandoned vehicles, staffing at the health clinic, a speed bump here and there. The Gov ordered immediate renovations to the fire and police building in Coral Bay and a review of all dilapidated buildings. The Gov says he’ll hold similar meetings on St. Croix, St. Thomas and Water Island. 03/07/97 7:37 AM

No PCB problem

WAPA doesn’t have a PCB problem after all. Remember the Daily News raised a question about the possibility of PCB leakage into Krum Bay. They even thought the PCB’s might be in our water intake. Well relax,. The testing has been done and the results are good., No PCB leaks in Krum Bay. Concentrations are well below EPA standards and they are not in the water supply. New Shopping Center

Port of Sale broke ground this morning in the open lot between the Havensight Mall and Wendy’s. This is the beginning of a 8 month construction process that will produce a new shopping center with a focus on outlets, budget shopping and off-price retail. The idea is to appeal to both the local shopper and the visitor looking for bargains. No store names have been released to date. 03/07/97 8:44 AM

Main Street Mall Coming Back

The Main Street Mall is coming back. Beginning Monday there will be no parking on Main Street. There are new provisions for short term parking like 30 minutes and 1 hour on the side roads. Taxi’s only on Raadet’s Gade. There will be a free shuttle bus from Western Cemetary to downtown also a shuttle from Schneider hospital to downtown, so park where the parking is easy and ride free. 03/07/97 7:42 AM

Hess Has New Contract

Hess has a new contract with its workers who are part of the United Steelworkers. The new contract raises wages across the board. Now the entry level minimum will be $13.90 per hour with a top hourly rate of $21.09 per hour. The workers retain tehir fringe benefits including the company retirement plan. 03-06 PM

New Car Insurance

Lt Gov Mapp met with insurance industry representatives to work on getting a low car insurance rate. The territory is considering mandatory car insurance, that’s an easy sell for some some insurance vendor to sell insurance for 58,000 of our vehicles. Mapp wants a rate for the mandatory policy around 150 to 175 dollars 03/06/97 2:39 PM

Public Hearing – Estate Humbug Site

There a town meeting tonight on the topic of the proposed landfill at Estate Humbug St. Croix. The meeting is tonight at 6:00 PM at the Legislative Conference room in Frederikstead. The Senate is meeting right now in a hearing on the Casino Control Commission. 03/07/97 7:38 AM

Road Paving Project Saturday & Sunday

Dept. of Public Works will be paving from Havensight to the top of the hill at Frenchman’s Bay intersection. That’s all day Saturday and Sunday from around 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Please assist this project by using alternate routes. There will be major delays on the road from Havensight to the top of the hill and down. 03/07/97 9:24 AM

Humanities Council Tickets Available

Tickets are available at the door for tonights Humanities Council lecture and honoring of Frederick Gjessing. That’s at Frenchman’s Reef this evening. Dr Liverpool is inviting students. There is a special Students are able to attend for $10 with Student ID

Museum Sponsors Seminars

The Ivan Jadan Museum on St. John has a special seminar tomorrow at 10:00 AM , 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM about the Robinson Caruso of St. John, the only man who could bring forth a song from stone. At the Ivan Jadan museum on JGenip St. between Gallows Point and Battery Hill.

Blood Drive

The Red Cross Blood Drive is coming up next week. The team will conduct 5 blood drives in St. Thomas. The opportunity to give blood is one of the ways you can really help the Red Cross. On Wednesday of next week the team will accept blood donations at UVI, On Thursday the blood drive is at Tropical Shipping and Gold’s Gym. On Friday you can donate blood at Tutu Park Mall. Did you know that when you donate a pint of blood it could save the lives of up to four people. Did you know it takes 6 donors to cover the blood requirements for major surgery. Help Can’t Wait. Coming Up Tomorrow:

  • The Al McBean Little League is looking for volunteers to help the young athletes with their homework. The idea is to help with daily homework at Al McBean Complex in Tutu between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM Call Sherry George after 5:00 PM at 777-7755.
  • Education Station has a model car show on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The contest is open to everyone with three classes of prizes. That’s Sunday at 1:00 PM
  • In Line skating is holding a training for in-line safety skate patrol. On Sunday from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM and again in the afternoon. You can learn to be in the in-line skate safety patrol.
