Delegate Christian-Green Says STOP Medicare Cuts

The delegate is calling for a full court press by all of us to get Congress to restore a million dollars of Medicaid funding to the Virgin Islands. The Congressional sub-committee on Health and the Environment removed funding for Medicaid for the Territories, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia to meet budget cutting goals. Delegate Christian-Green says she has written to all members of the full committee to get these cuts restored. She is urging all of us to write to congress to get these cuts restored.

President Calls for Volunteers – Schneider Calls for Volunteers

The Governor has called for a group of volunteers to plan volunteer programs in the Virgin Islands. Noting that Presidents Clinton, Bush and other American Leaders are sponsoring volunteerism, the Governor is asking a committee of 12 to begin developing new volunteer programs here to include mentoring programs, safe after school activities, and skills training. Dr George Rosenberg will chair the group which includes Dorothy Elskoe, David Sharp and Joe Aubain among the 12 members .

Homeowners Week

This week is homeowners week and the Chase bank is offering a free class on home ownership on Saturday June 14th. Virgin Islands Housing Authority has congratulations for all of the Housing Authority residents who became homeowners this year. The Authority highlights Ms Joyce Lawrence, Ms Muriel Herbert, Ms Medora Roberts and Ann Marie St Ange on St. Croix. On St. Thomas they acknowledge Ms Rashaan Chase who is the first resident of Anna’s Retreat Heights to become a homeowner since Hurricane Marilyn 06/12/97 3:47 PM

Governor Schneider spoke to Rotary

The Governor had the microphone at Tuesday’s Rotary meeting and he took the occasion to clarify his trip to Asia. He had business meetings with food processing plants companies about processing more foods here. and use of the St. Croix docks as transshipment ports. The Gov. is exploring teaming up with Florida to create travel packages that include Florida’s theme parks and a trip to the Virgin Islands. He is talking with pharmaceutical companies about getting local herbs into the drug market. The Gov. noted that the return of the Navy didn’t happen overnight – it took lots of meetings and planning to bring the Navy back to the Virgin Islands

Frett is fretting over Limited Partnership Bill

Senator Smokey Frett says the new limited partnership law is flawed. The fees for the partnerships would drop eroding our tax base, and he can’t support a bill that decreases revenue.

John Lucien performed in Congress

Native son musician John Lucien was honored in the US Congress yesterday and he performed in Congress last evening. John was also given an award for the Quiet Music style that he created. That’s Native son John Lucien of Tortola making good news.

Solid Waste Task Force is looking for Proposals

The solid waste task force is seeking proposals to deal with the Anguilla land fill. There is a request for proposals out to address the problem of the landfill being too close to the airport. The Daily News says trash may be hauled to Puerto Rico, but nothing from Government house confirms that theory.

Delegate Dr Donna Christian-Green on Web

Delegate Dr Donna Christian-Green announced that her office has introduced a site on the world wide web so that we can read about the delegates activities, communicate with her by e-mail, read her biography, and get an update on her activities in Congress. The new web site is at www.house.gov/christian-green/

Alcohol Control Board has a deadline today for all applications for alcohol licenses. The license review will take place on June 27th. There is a confirmation party for Dean Luke today at 4 PM at Paul M Pearson Gardens

Virgin Islander will Head Lions Club District

UVI Vice President Malcolm Kirwan was elected the District Governor of the International Association of Lions Clubs. He will preside over Lions activities in the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Cayman islands, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Antigua, Dominica, ST Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenada.

Volunteers Needed

St. John Community Foundation is sponsoring the Children’s Carnival Village near the National Parks Visitor Center in Cruz Bay St. John during this years Carnival. Coordinator Mary Ellis is asking all St. John community groups to serve as volunteers to help operate the Children’s village booths and run the games. Sore Spot Results

On the sore spot report: Remember those 9 wrecked cars in Agnes Fancy that were on our sore sport last week. Tyrone Martin of Dept. of Public Works say they are gone. A Big Thank You to Mr. Baily of the Traffic bureau and Mr. Olive of Public Works. For a job well done. Our caller says three are still there, so we’ll keep you posted. You keep telling us the sore spots and we’ll keep cleaning them up.

Water Island Report

The Territorial Emergency Communication Committee will include Water Island for the first time. The group will meet on Monday to plan for emergency communication and Water Island will have a representative at the gathering.
