Community Policing Grant
We told you before about a new grant of $698,000 for community policing. That the grant will permit the police to create 29 new civilian positions in the Police Dept. that means more police on the streets. Nationwide there’s been a 7% decline in violent crime, due to the idea of community policing. Oh, 1,100 grants were made in all 50 states but only one territory – the US Virgin Islands. Funds will also purchase mobile data terminals, automated booking equipment and geographical mapping systems – all designed to fight crime. 06/05/97 2:50 PM

Attorney General says “Hold the Parole”
The Parole board is hearing from the victims of crime that they do not want criminals to get paroled just to make room in the prisons for other criminals. Attorney General Julio Brady says he will delay the parole process while victims are made aware of who is eligible for parole so the victims can testify to the parole board.
Delegate Christian-Green Says Include Us
Delegate Dr Donna Christian-Green used a meeting of the Black Caucus to promote the territories to Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala. Delegate Christian-Green wants the territories included in a new program to help people with the AIDS virus. She also said we need more support for our welfare to work program and for our hospitals. The delegate also took to the house floor with a tribute to her grand mother who celebrated her one hundred and first birthday.
Oil Spill Cleaned up
The cruse ship Sea Breeze had a small oil spill yesterday at the WICO dock, but fast action by the crew got the spill cleaned with absorbent materials and they disposed of the oil correctly. By 9:30 they were back at sea.
Judith Watson is a Rising Star
Travel Agent Magazine has a list of the rising stars in the tourism industry and Asst. Commissioner of Tourism Judith Watson is one of the 100 rising stars. Watson is in charge of our local and national advertising and our public relations campaign. The remarkable turn around in public perception of the Virgin Islands is one of her accomplishments. Good Work Judith Watson. She says development of Water Island is her next big project.
Hospital Board to meet with all Employees
The Hospital Governing Board Will hold two meetings today at 10:00 AM – and again at 2:00 PM – so that all members of the hospital staff can get an update on the six month strategic plan for the hospital. The meetings will also cover hurricane preparedness as we enter the storm season.

Bone Marrow Registration
Lets get this right, the bone marrow event at Tutu Park Mall is being hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Sigma Theta Omega Chapter Its on Saturday from noon to 5:00 PM – Currently 3 million people are registered nationwide for bone marrow and only 7% are African Americans. Bone marrow transplants are critical for the survival of people with fatal blood diseases and the best match is from people of similar ethic backgrounds. You can help save the life of another person. And registering is painless and easy.
