55 Women Move to Self Sufficiency
The 55 women of the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills program held graduation on Thursday and got their diplomas, their GED’s and a new start on life. The five year old JOBS program has helped these women get off welfare, with job skills and placement in good jobs that pay real money and let them contribute to the community. They are empowered women. They are on their way to new jobs and they are off the road to welfare and dependency. Good Work making Good news.

News from Washington:
The Virgin Islands posse softball team defeated the BET Black Entertainment Television team in double headers 18-5 and 23-12. They are in first place in the league with 13 wins and 1 loss. Next Sunday 7/21/97 the Virgin Islands Posse will take on the #2 team for the County Championship.
Lions and Leos Did Volunteer Work
The 1997 Lutheran Youth Faith in Action Cruise have been working on Project Servant Events. More than 200 volunteers came in by cruise ship visited her and performed public service projects like painting the Dober school classrooms and the worked on Ivanna Eudora Kean School. They were hosted by the Five St. Thomas and St. John Lions Clubs under the direction of East End Lions and Shirley Quetel-Hendricks.
Blood Donation
Did you donate Blood the last time? No, well you have a chance to do it this coming week. July 22 at Lutheran Church St. John, July 23rd at Nisky Center St. Thomas and July 24th at the Federal Building in St. Thomas. You can save a life if you donate blood, and take it from me, it really is a lot less painful than you worry it is.
EPA To Host Landfill Class
The US EPA is going to train landfill operators on St. Croix in August. They want to increase the level of understanding of federal regulations on location, worker training, design criteria groundwater monitoring and closure criteria. The classes will be held on Aug 18-19 At Gertrude’s Restaurant on St. Croix.
Gomez Starts Support group
Senator Gomez says sending juveniles to jail like Adults is a mistake. She sees the damage done to families. Gomez is starting a new support group for mothers raising sons to help them keep the boys away from crime. She says, these mothers are stretched and they need help with their sons.
Transportation Committee for St. John
The newly appointed committee for transportation on St. John has begun to meet. There are 11 representatives from all sector of the St. John Community led by James Dalmaida, Sidney Challenger and Richard Calvin George. The committee will meet weekly to plan and develop the transportation services on St. John. Other members include Dione Anthony, Edna Freeman, Ira Christian, Alvis Christian, Claudine Scatliffe, Angfelo Hill, Jose Penn and Roy Smith
Virgin Islands Advocacy goes to the Bank
More law suits are being filed yesterday to bring businesses in compliance with the ADA. The Virgin Islands Advocacy filed suits against Banco Popular, Scotia, Chase Manhattan, The Bank of St. Croix and the VI Community Bank. The Advocacy group wants better doors and access to the banks for the disabled.
