Bingo! The Casino Control Commission is going to control Bingo

The Casino Control Commission is moving to introduce commercial bingo. They are asking the legislature to move forward a bill to set the stage for legalized commercial bingo. The law would also set bounds for charitable bingo, and rules for the operation of the games. More than 100 people have signed up to take the class in casino card dealing. The casino commission is asking for changes to the zoning laws to make casino permitting easier.

No You canít take the furniture!

The Senate is grinding into action amid claims and counterclaims about who has what furniture in what office. Senator Berry wants the squabbling to stop. Meanwhile the proposals for new laws are pouring in. Sen. Commachoís Rules Committee will meet at the end of the month on the Governorís list of nominees. And Sen. Hansen will open her labor committee on the 29th to look at the Brown and Root report.

New Smithís Bay Development

The Governor sent legislation to ratify a major CZM permit for a new facility in Smithís Bay, that would include a new terminal building, passenger ferry dock, cistern, fuel dock, parking spaces and a walk way at parcels #1 and 16 in Smithís Bay. The Governor also sent leases to the Senate for Frankís Bake Shop, and ubin Robertís Construction Company both in Subbase.

Police Re-open Schrader Command St. Croix

The Police re-opened the substation on St. Croix known as the Ann Schrader Command in the La Reine Shopping Center. It had been closed since Hurricane Hugo. The facility will cut police response time in the mid-island area and signals a renewed effort to decentralize the police departmentís presence.

No Tax Forms – Get them On-line!

It is tax time. The IRB sayís they donít have all the tax forms. But you can go to UVI Library where a CD-ROM computer disk from Washington has all federal tax forms. The library can reproduce any tax forms you need. If you are on the Internet go to www.irs.ustreas.gov and print your own tax forms. Maybe thatís not good news.

Martin Luther King Jr. Events

The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration begins this evening with a special service at the Hebrew Congregation in St. Thomas. Seven students who live in the image of Dr King will be honored.  Monday morning on St. Thomas there is a remembrance march that begins at Market Square at 9 AM to Emancipation Garden for a Celebration at 10 AM. At 1 PM Monday bells will ring across America in Dr. Kingís honor. Also Monday Business and Professional women have a walk-a-thon to benefit the scholarship program. Meet at McDonaldís at 5:45 AM and march to Brewerís Beach

Coming Up Tomorrow:

  • Ivanna Eudora Kean School Class of 77 dance is coming up on January 18th at American Legion Hall in Subbase. This is a benefit for scholarships and for band uniforms
  • On Saturday Berthe C. Boschulte Schoolís Parents computer classes begin with classes on Computer literacy, word processing and typing at 9 AM at the school library. Call 775-4987
  • Thereís a lecture on the Camille issarro Exhibit Sunday udah Cohen will speak at 2:00 PM on Sunday about the issarro family and their lives in St. Thomas in the 1830ís. The lecture is free and open to everyone.
