School Season is about to Begin

It seems like only yesterday that we were reporting all the graduation news to you. Starting tomorrow, schools is back, at least for incoming UVI students. Sat August 10th is the first day of orientation for new students. First test is Monday, that’s when new students can take placement exams to set the level of course they need. School, Tests, must be the end of summer.

Graduation News

There is graduation news, the St. John Nurses Assistance Program is graduating a new crop of students out of the 8 week Nurses Aide Course. The graduation is tonight at 7:30 at the Lutheran Church in Cruz Bay St. John.

Mock Drug Bust

The police are in the air over St. John this morning. They are staging a mock drug bust for the Summer Youth Program. As part of drug education, the police are going to stage a mock drug drop from a helicopter and a chase by the marine and police units. So if it starts to look a little crazy in Cruz Bay Harbor, its all a show.

Water Island Transfer Coming

The Governor is holding a meeting today with the representatives of the Department of the Interior to negotiate final details of the transfer of Water Island to the Territory. The Governor expects that by the end of September the transfer of the island will be complete.

FEMA Deadline

The FEMA deadline is coming up. Sept. 9th will be the last day to apply for assistance from Hurricane Bertha. If you don’t apply, you can’t get aid. Also the end of Hurricane Marilyn is upon us. The Department. of Human Services is finalizing the individuals and family grants program If you are expecting a grant and haven’t heard from them call 693-0201.

Books for Kids

Kids at Kids Inc. and Beatitudes Day Care Center are getting free personalized books with a story woven around their neighborhood and their own names in the story. LeaSan Publications is giving the books to the kids to promote good reading habits. Call them at 774-5438

Seminar on Emotionally Abused Women

There is an educational seminar coming up for health care professionals, the topic is Emotionally Abused Women. It’s set for August 30th in the morning call for reservations at 775-4875

  • Text Arts Alive is on this weekend at Tillets Garden with music and art to enjoy.
  • The Folklife Festival is open today from 10 to 5 PM with a tremendous variety of regional cultural delights to savor. There’s a free bus from Nisky and the culture festival is on all weekend.
  • There is also the Celebrity weekend in Paradise. Just starting now is the Rap Session at Charlotte Amalie High School and 8 PM this evening there is a concert with Imaginations Brass at Windward Passage.   • Saturday: Horse Racing Commission is meeting at HPR in Subbase at 10 AM.

Star Watch

Finally this: There is a shooting star shower coming up this weekend. You can expect a meteor every 10 minutes. While you can see the sky anywhere, there Environmental Association of St. Thomas is holding a Perseid meteor watch at Scotts Beach at Compass Point
