Daily News SOLD

This just in, the Daily News has been sold. The Gannett publishing company has sold the Virgin Islands Daily News to Jeffrey Processor for an undisclosed sum. All staff are staying on at this time as the sale is being completed. The Gannett representatives are on St. Thomas now to finalize the sale. No word whether this will involve a change in the editorial policy of the paper.

Roof Program – More than a Success

Dean Luke Commissioner of Property and Procurement says the roof program is more than just a success. It is a total turn around. From 12 houses to 200 houses in the program. And the payments to the contractors are getting on schedule. Today they are sending out checks that bring all contractors up to date with payments. Luke says it took a while to get everyone up to speed, but they are going full speed ahead and getting ready for the next round of 200 houses.

The Senate is Marking up the Budget Today

The Senate is holding a budget mark up session today. Senator Gomez says all senators are welcome and she is hoping that by days end they can have a budget that everyone can call their own. The spirit of cooperation may carry over from the summit to this budget markup. We’ll have a full report on Lee Carle’s NewsDay.

AT&T Will Begin Clean Up

A&T of the Vi and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources came to an agreement to begin the clean up of the drilling mud in St. Croix beginning immediately. AT&T will bring in ships and clean up gear to get rid of the mud.

Cruise Ships Are Back

The storm is history and the cruise ships are back. We lost the MV Sensation that was due in today – they are going west instead. But we will be back on schedule when the Grandeur of the Seas and the Nordic Empress call on St. Thomas on Wednesday. We have no ships this Thursday and Friday.

Sept. is National Cholesterol Education Month

This is the month that we need to think about cholesterol. Give your heart a hand this month and think about what you are eating. Eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Lean meat, fish, chicken. No skin. Drop the egg yokes. They are to worst. Chose low fat milk and cheese. Whole grains are good for you and cereals too. The Chronic Disease Prevention Program representative. Marie Elise Witmer RN is traveling the territory to teach everyone about cholesterol.

The Casino commission wants everyone to know that the idea of the casino act is to stimulate new business. If you have a business idea that is related to the new casino industry, call the casino commission and discuss it with them. They are open every day between 8:00 AM – and 5:00 PM – at #5 Orange Grove Christiansted.

Coast Weeks

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources is planning to celebrate Coast Weeks in the Virgin Islands with a series of events. From Sept 20th through October 13 there is a national CoastWeek program going on nationwide. The idea is to celebrate, educate, participate and get the trash out of the splash. The St. Thomas and Water Island beach clean ups are on Sept 20th. The beach clean up day on St. Croix is Sept 27th and on St. John on October 4th.
