Dr Christian-Green Acts on Health

This is the 27th annual meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus and our Dr Delegate is taking the leadership role in teaching her colleagues about the gaps in the health care system. She says despite the legislation that has been passed over the years, little impact has been made in the health of African-Americans. She has co-sponsored more than 30 pieces of health legislation.

Will the Busses Stay on St. Croix?

They are holding a tug-a-war over who gets the busses. On St. Croix Senator Hansen doesn’t want the busses transferred to St. Thomas. Verne Callwood says they will prefer to fix the busses on St. Thomas and he will get the funds to pay the vendors to get the parts to fix the busses. He also says will return the busses to St. Croix.

Lorraine Berry Says We have a Financial Crisis.

Senate President Lorraine Berry was the main speaker this week at two major organizations. Her primary comment in both setting was the same, We have admit that we have a fiscal crisis on our hands. She says we need a Recovery Effort. We are doing deficit spending, that’s against the law. She wants an immediate halt to the creation of exempt positions. Also from the Senate the Committee on Finance is meeting to consider the sale of unpaid tax bills, and a host of budget related measures.

Relief for Montserrat Residents

The US INS has created two new statuses for residents of Montserrat to permit more immigration of refugees from that volcano. Kenneth Allen of the Montserrat Association announces an emergency meeting at Victor’s New Hideout on Sunday the 14th at 5:00 PM –

Call 779-2500 Coming Up Tomorrow: CAHS Class of 1990 Walk-A-Thon is Sept 13th beginning at 6:30 AM – at the Legislature Coming Up: Saturday at Al McBean ballpark has a celebration of the Pee Wee and La Lache leagues baseball season. Saturday at 10:00 AM – GERS will be closing the 1997 fiscal year from the 15th through the 30th and will be closed to processing new loan applications. Friday Sept 12th is the last day to get loan applications processed. Dept. Housing Parks and Recreation announces the afterschool program in Subbase in dress making, native cooking, steel drums, sailing, swimming and crafts Call Bunni Brothers at 774-0255. The Wheatley Skills Center has classes in micro-computer applications and clerical typing. Classes begin Sept 15th and you can still sign up at the Wheatley Skills Center. Saturday is also St. John Saturday with a host of activities all day. Ferry service is coming to St. John from Fajardo, St. Thomas, Tortola and St. Croix. Entertainment includes the Dimensions band on the boat from Fajardo and if enough come from St. Croix, the Sleepless nights will be on the baot too. Sat 10:00 AM – -noon Jr. Gardening and Ecology Academy is calling on all students parents and staff to come to a meeting at Wheatley Skills Center. Bring your swim suits.
