Governor Says Let’s Clean Up these Islands

Governor Schneider met yesterday with members of the Anti-litter and beatification Commission to plan a revitalization of Emancipation Garden. Plans call for new trees, a brick sidewalk, and a renewed water fountain. Vendors plaza in St. Thomas and St. Croix are getting face lifts with fresh paint, new trash receptacles, and more lights.

Budget Hearings on HOLD

Senator Hansen has put the budget hearings on hold saying the administration’s budget is rife with problems and inconsistencies. OMB Directory Bowery said that a large number of Government Departments are budgeted at their historic levels. On the tax refunds, Bowery reported that 7.5 million dollars has been paid to date. That’s 7000 refund checks. There are still 18 million in tax refunds to go.

Anniversary of Emergency Declaration

The declaration of the state of emergency will be one year old tomorrow. Can it really be a full year? The original declaration was on Sept. 5th 1995 and has been renewed every 30 days from then until now.

Teacher’s Election Issue

Calling retroactive pay the issue of the election, Teachers Union President Glen Smith says the teachers will only back candidates who will fight for the retroactive pay.

To Meter or Not to Meter

The Water Haulers at last night’s St. Croix meeting said they don’t think the water meters are necessary. They said “don’t force us to buy $5000 meter – it will put us out of business”. The Department of Licensing & Consumer Affairs is trying to enforce the law that has been on the books for years. The next meeting for water haulers is tonight at the Department of Licensing & Consumer Affairs office in Subbase.

St. John Park Anniversary Coming Up

The national park in St. John will be 40 years old this December. Plans are being formulated now for a celebration including a plaque to Lawrence Rockefeller who donated the land. There will be a contest for a post office stamp and other events.
